This article was uncovered and transcribed by Horst Lochner.

Hi,
According to my researcher, Sabine Schleichert, this "announcement listed a large number of deserters. The text says that these men deserted and did not return, and that they are summoned to justify themselves at the military court. If they did not follow this summon, the knacker will placard their names at the gallows (which implies that this punishment is meant to diminish their personal honor, too) and their current and future property will be confiscated. Their relatives are forbidden to hide anything of this property from the authorities."

This so called "Wanted" list was uncovered by Ansbach-Bayreuth researcher Horst Lochner, who transcribed the 180 names and home towns of the deserted soldiers, and shared a copy of his transcription with me. I do not have a copy of the entire article, (maybe others do), but I do have a copy of the page that lists my ancestor, Johann Rierschneck as being from Watzendorf, which is indicated by an arrow. This Watzendorf notation is the only information ever found that would give any indication as to where to search for my ancestor, and indeed proved to be a vital clue in helping me find his place of birth in Germany. I do want to point out, however, that in my case, the town listed as Watzendorf was not the birthplace of my ancestor, but in actuality, turned out to be the district Waizendorf where he was living at the time that he was pressed into military service by the Ansbach troops.

Many of the military records associated with our Hessian ancestors are very difficult to obtain, if in fact they are obtainable at all.

I would like to thank Herr Lochner very much for the information that he uncovered and shared with me. It was extremely important in my search for my Hessian ancestor, and hopefully it will be helpful to others who are searching for soldiers of the Ansbach-Bayreuth troops who did not return to Germany after the Revolutionary War.

Also, I have two other things that I will be sending to you to put on the website soon. One is a transcription of the names that Bob Brooks is doing of the Ansbach muster lists that I have. The other is the article that I've been working on about the Hessian Barracks at Winchester and Frederick!
