The Horseshoe inside the base

Each Battalion had to provide a rifle company on rotation to guard the base known as The Horseshoe.
The Horseshoe was an old volcanic crater immediately north of Dat Do. The base had been attacked in 1966 by D445. They killed 10 ARVN Rangers and captured their weapons. But by 1971 the base and the area surrounding it were pretty quiet. We wondered why they would take bush soldiers out of the Jungle to man the base ... but it was a real nice break to sit quietly up on the rim of the crater. We ambushed sometimes at night around the base and occasionally patrolled by day ... just to show our presence.
