Hessians who signed the Oath of Allegiance in the State of Pennsylvania

Donated by: Ingrid Briles

A member of the mailing list

This is a list of Hessians who signed the Oath of Allegiance in the State of Pennsylvania between 1777 and 1789. This list was taken from the book by Thompson Westcott, “Names of Persons Who Took the Oath of Allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania between the Years 1777 and 1789, with A History of the “Test Laws” of Pennsylvania.”

Some of these names are listed as the name and the fact that they were a Hessian, only. Others are listed with occupations, and other information. The punctuation and spelling are as listed in the book.

“We the subscribers do swear (or affirm) that I renounce and refuse all allegiance to George the third, King of Great Britain, his heirs and successors, and that I will be faithful, and bear true allegiance to the commonwealth of Pensylvania as a free and Independent State, and that I will not at any time do or cause to be done any matter or thing that will be prejudicial or injurious to the freedom and Independence thereof, as declared by Congress; and, also, that I will discover and make known to some one Justice of the Peace of this state, all treasons or traitorous conspiracies which I now know or hereafter shall know, to be formed against this or any of the United States of America.

Plunkett Fleeson,

Philadelphia, 1778”

There are other listings for very German names, but not as Hessians. Especially after 1782, there are listings for “a German”. I guess it was in an effort to make new citizens feel more at home, just a thought. There are German names listed as being released prisoners of war, but again, they are not listed as Hessians.
