Virgil D. Phillips was born about June or July of 1897 in Mineral City, Ohio. At the time he enlisted at the Columbus Barracks into the Regular Army on November 3, 1917, he was living in Canton, Ohio. After his elistment Phillips was assigned to the 1st Company, Coast Artillery Corps at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. When the 57th Artillery was formed he on January 11, 1918 was then blended into the Headquarters Company of the 57th Artillery. He would serve with this unit all through out the war during the engagements at the St. Mihiel, Muse-Argonne areas and during the Defensive Sector operations. Phillips sailed from the United States with the 57th Artillery on May 10, 1918 aboard the Rijndam consisting of 60 officers and 1,765 enlisted men. Pvt Phillips would return with his unit on January 14, 1919 aboard the cruiser USS Huntington and would be Honorably discharged on January 29, 1919.
