On The USS Blue
during the Korean War.
In Loving Memory

Welcome to my Military page! I have always had a facination with all things Military.

As I was growing up my dad would often recall stories of life as a sailor and on board the DD 744 USS Blue.

My Father must have had an urge to join the armed service because a story was told by my grandma that my Dad signed up with the Army completed basic training and was actually shipped out to Germany ... all at the age of 16! {My Dad always said 17 years old in his version of the story}
When his C.O. found out his true age, he was promptly shipped back home! Then when my Father turned 18 he signed with the Navy, and spent just about 3 years on the USS Blue, during the Korean war.
My father has passed away and since the time of his death I have had a box of photographs that I have wanted to put into a page on line. My dream of doing that became reality when this site first appeared online in November 2002.

This web site contains photograph's that were either taken or collected by my father Leo Glenn Ullom.
Only two of the photo's have information written on the back so I am faced with having many Unidentified photo's of ships, ports, waters and fellow shipmates.

With nothing more in hand than these photo's and my fathers "report of separation" papers, I did a "search" and found the website Destroyers Online

It was through Destroyers Online, and the webmaster, Mark Roberts Who has provided so much information to me, That I have been able to make contact with some very important people who were on The Blue.

One in particular "Hambone" Who was on ship the same time as my dad and has helped me to understand just what my dad did while on board! { For an explanation, read an email from Hambone,}Remember, All I had were the separation papers and stories in my memory that were told so very long ago ...

Another person who has helped me is Mr. Sam Zuccaro FCS3, (On the Blue during the Korean war) 1950-52 We have exchanged emails and photos regarding the USS Blue several times.

If after viewing these photographs, you may have insight as to the origin or nature of the photo, please email me and I will update the data for the particular photo.

Update:

On January 3, 2004 I received an email from Jim Vause; Radioman Second Class aboard the Blue September 1950 - June 17, 1953. Jim was kind enough to write me and let me know where these photo's originated from.
"We had a ship's journalist and that was his job to sort of record our voyages and military activities ......he made some great pictures for us and all hands were given a chance to buy them". To read more what Jim has to say, click here.
