MARTINSBURG, W.Va
July 19, 1863
Detachment of 4th Separate Brigade, 8th Army Corps.
While marching toward Martinsburg this brigade, under Brig.-
Gen. William W. Averell, came upon and engaged the Confederate
pickets until they were reinforced about noon, when Kelley
ordered Averell to retire. The enemy followed for some distance but was dispersed by
Ewing's battery.
Eight Union men were wounded, and the enemy lost 5 killed and
a few prisoners.
