2LT PHILLIP R. CLARK

By direction of the President, under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, the DFC is awarded to:

2LT Phillip R. Clark, Air Corps, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as bombardier on a mission over enemy occupied Europe, 16 Sept 1943.  After successfully completing the bombing mission, the aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters, and LT Clark was seriously wounded and thrown from his gun position by enemy fire.  In spite of his serious wounds he returned to his position and continued to fire his guns against subsequent attacks until he collapsed from shock and loss of blood.  The heroism displayed by LT Clark on this occasion reflects the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
