John
Andruszkiewiez (Andrews), was born 1/7/1922, in Boston, MA.
Enlisted as an AAF Cadet in January 1942.
After his commissioning in Sept. 1942 he flew with then LT. James Stewart
(the actor). Joined the 349th BG (B-26) at McDill, FL in Oct.
1942. Trained for torpedo dropping
at Lakeland, FL Jan. 1943 and staged for Alaska at Lake Charles, LA March 1943.
All crews were shipped as replacements to the 42nd wing in
Sedrata, N. Africa. He flew 40 missions in Tunisia and Sardinia bombing French
and Italian Riviera. Injured while
bombing Rome, Italy. Supported
Anzio beach landing. Memorable
mission was the Island of Panteleria, then seeing the results in newsreel in
Tunis Theater in Tunisia.
After
WWII, assigned to the 19th BG, Clark AFB, Manila P.I.
Once as they approached Clark at low level they saw tracer bullets fired
from weapons by the rebel Huks.
In
March 1946, after surviving a flat spin in a B-29 over the China Sea he decided
to leave the AF as a captain and return to TX to his wife of one year.
Did his pre-med work at Texas Tech in Lubbock and graduated in May 1950
at Chicago, IL as an optometrist.
At the age of 69, he had been in solo practice for the past 42 years in
Plainview, TX.
