1LT Lloyd Scott Hansen

323 BS/91 BG(H)
O-731058
Home state: MN

This information came from the MACR 550 and copilot Cramer's post-war statement.  The photocopy was very poor and I am attempting to get a better copy.

Cramer:
Plane, 42-3079, was shot down at 1530 hours, south of St. Nazaire, FRA on 16 Sep 1943.  The target was shipping at Nantes, FRA.  Entire crew bailed out.  The plane began to break up and crashed into the Atlantic.

MACR:
2LT Kenneth C. Homuth made the following statement:
"I first noticed the B17 on fire near the ground.  Very shortly it crashed into the ground and exploded.  It then burned more fiercely.  I saw three small, white objects floating close to the ground and near the burning plane; they looked like parachutes."

The plane that Hansen was shot down in was involved in a mid-air collision with another crew.  Click here to see the photo and an explanation.

Hello, My name is Debra Johnson.
Lloyd Hansen was married to Carol Cherrington, a cousin to my mother-in-law, whose husband was in Italy with an engineer battalion and throughout her letters, she talks of Carol sending packages to her husband, Lloyd and of his liberation and coming home. Your information makes a clearer picture, of where he was shot down, and adds more to the story within the letters.

Lloyd was mentioned in Ken Burns/Godfrey Ward's book: "The War", page 131.  The article was one of many written by Al McIntosh owner and editor of Rock County Star-Herald in Luverne, MN.
