Dual rated as a bombardier. Shot down and KIA on 3 Jan 1945 while flying
on B-29, 42-24766 Leading Lady. Her target was Nagoya city-
docks & urban areas. The MACR #: 10905.
Crew list:
MAJ: Wilbur E. Hurlbutt – KIA
2LT: Felix P. Omillian - KIA

1LT: Glenn C. Triesdell – KIA
Sgt: Joseph P. Highan – KIA

Cpl: Richard P. Steinberg – KIA
LT Col: Marcus A. Mullen – KIA
Sgt: Thomas H. Hedges – POW – He was moved to Osaka Kempei Tai
Headquarters, then to Tokyo Kempei and imprisoned in Omori POW Camp.
Leading Lady from the 500th
Bomb Group piloted by Major Wilbur "Barney" Hurlbutt was rammed
between the nose and the No. 3 engine over Okazaki, southeast of Nagoya, by
Lt. Minoru Shirota of the 55th Sentai. Sgt. Harold T. Hedges, the tail
gunner and only survivor reported their last seconds:
"We slid out of formation and fell 5,000 feet. We leveled out for just
a second, the right side exploded and the aircraft rolled over on her it's
back and went into a spin. Just as it rolled over it threw me out of my
escape hatch. I opened my chute right after I went out and I was watching
the ship spin down. Two Japanese fighters came in strafing me and I lost
sight of the ship. That was the last time I saw it or the crew."
Japanese sources say "probably the result of an accidental collision
rather then an intentional ramming. Shirota parachuted out but died of his
injuries the following day."

"...Geyer, the other waist gunner and the radio operator
had bailed out just before the aircraft exploded. Geyer was the first to
reach the ground. He noticed some German ground troops advancing toward
him. He quickly removed his parachute and crawled into a wheat field where
he hid. From there he watched his two friends land nearby. When the
Germans came within range of the two Americans, they raised their machine
guns and riddled them both with bullets. Geyer was stunned with horror. He
wanted to charge the two Germans in revenge but knew that this wood be
foolhardy since he was only armed with a .45 caliber pistol. His only hope
for survival was to stay hidden until the Germans left the area. He
remained hidden until after dark and eventually he made it back to England
with the help of the underground. Though grateful for his good fortune, he
would never forget the sight of his friends being gunned down."

After graduation from bombardier school was
sent to a B-29 crew in Nebraska. That lasted for a month then the squadron
was split. Half went overseas, other half went to Clovis AFB
(including John) Photo. Diploma. John then instructed until April '45 when
he was transferred to Colorado Springs to take charge of a radar training
echelon. That lasted for a couple of months and then he was sent to
Alamagordo AFB and added to a crew ready to go to Japan.
The army found out that he had over 50
