crew had brought that particular fort over from Bangor, Maine.
Ethan Allen's crew made it back to the ZOI
by September of 44 (approx). Of his crew, the co-pilot (Armstrong) was
wounded in the leg, Allen himself took a bit of flack that bounced off of
his steering column and hit him in the chest. His flack jacket saved

On 3 Mar 1944, while on a mission to Bergen,
GER on plane 42-38075, known as 'Romeo', lost in a head on mid air collision
during recall. MACR is 2795. An eyewitness account follows:
When the recall was given things began to
happen. It seemed like the air was full of B17's going in all
directions. There must have been at least 500. The heavy contrails
made it all the more confusing. Everything went fairly well until we
met head on with another group. I thought we were done for and must
have aged ten years in a matter of minutes. One ship went over us and
another underneath at the same time, both so close I could see every detail
including numbers and the props clawing the air. We were lucky to
squeeze through but the ship and crew behind us were not so fortunate.
The ship that passed underneath us hit Carter's plane head on. There
was a blinding red flash as gasoline and bombs exploded simultaneously.
Then, nothing but pieces of falling debris and a big ball of smoke remained.

On Ploesti mission, the 464th lost 6 planes.
On Bucharest mission, their plane had 16 100lb armed bombs hang up in the
bomb bay that had to be jettisoned by hand by gunners Davis and Tygart. On
Vienna mission, 464th Bomb Group was leading the wing and earned a
Distinguished Unit Citation. The above crew was one of two planes shot down,
with several others damaged. They were flying on the left side at the rear
of the formation which was attacked by fighters just after bombs away. The
plane had an engine on fire and left the formation in a spin. Six chutes
were witnessed although eight crew members bailed out and were taken POW.
The plane was seen to crash just west of Parndorf, Austria with Kibler and
Arigoni still on board. All survivors were taken to Dulag in Frankfurt for
interrogation. The surviving officers then went to Stalag Luft I. The
enlisted men to Stalag Luft IV. When captured, Chapman was listed as wounded
with a sprained foot, presumably from the parachute landing. MACR

Known to fly on B17G Patty Jo, 42-31242.
An excerpt of a letter from Geo. W. Clarke
to a nephew dated 2 Sept 98.
I was drafted in the Army in February. 1941. It was supposed to be for one
year, but WWII came along and I did not get out until September 1945. I was
in the field artillery at Ft. Knox, KY until I transferred to the Air Force.
I received my commission as a 2LT in 1942 as a bombardier. They were short
of navigators at the time, so they sent me to navigator school at San
Marcos, Texas and I served as a navigator on a B-17 in the 8th Air Force in
England. My bombardier training was at Victorville, California. I flew 26
missions over Germany - not the greatest fun I ever had.
Then the Korean war broke out and I was
called back to duty. I took training as a navigator on a B-26, the Douglas
B-26, not the Martin B-26. I was sent to Korea in December 1951 and I flew
my first mission on December 13, 1951. My first mission over Germany had
been on December 13, 1943. Quite a coincidence.

not on board that day. Three were killed, the rest spent the remainder of
the war in the prison camps.

12-13-43. At 1750 MWT, B-17F # 42-29558 crashed ten miles
north of Rosebud, SD, killing ten crewmembers. The airplane took off from
Rapid City AAB, SD, at 1438 MWT on an instrument training flight. Poor
weather closed all airports at Rapid City and the airplane was forced to
divert to Ainsworth AAB, Nebraska. The pilot acknowledged the order. A
short time later, witnesses on the ground observed the airplane fall out of
the overcast out of control. The pilot was able to recover momentarily.
The airplane stalled and spun to the ground, exploding into flames upon
impact. A full summary of this accident can be found on Page 614 of Volume

From "Flying Eight Balls History", On 21 April 1944,
B-24H # 41-29418 took off on a bombing mission to Zwickau. There was
heavy rime ice in the middle clouds, with visibility of 4 miles according to
the accident report. The group of planes encountered bad icing
conditions during assembly north of Norwich, England. The aircraft was
climbing about 155 to 160 M.P.H. through overcast skies. Suddenly the
plane shuddered and bore sharply right and then back before canting over
into a spin. Unrecoverable, the planes tail and right wing finally twisted
off. The pilot and co-pilot were tossed into the cockpit roof and then
thrown out of the plane when it disintegrated in flight. Both were
injured. None of the other 8 men would survive.

"The first enemy fighter attacks caught DELTA REBEL No 2 and the
plane was badly hit. Eight inches of the stabilizer was shot away and the
aircraft caught fire. German eyewitnesses, presumably on the ground,
reported seeing the plane catch fire and peel away from the formation before
three chutes emerged. Inside the plane it was a shambles of torn metal and
severed cables. Both waist gunners were hit by 20mm shells and slumped to
the floor wounded. Other crew members struggled to give them first aid as
another fighter pass roared through the formation and slammed more 20mm
shells into the fuselage killing Sgt Zeinicki as he tended the wounded men.
The tail gunner managed to extricate himself from his cramped position and
tumble from the plane but his chute burst into a deep red flame and he
dropped like a rock. Six men reached the ground alive as the wreckage of
Delta Rebel No.2 plunged to earth at Brunninghausen near Dortmund."

Our Crew consisted of:
P: 1LT Arthur L. Birleffi 0-24109
CP: 2LT James M. Stewart 0-435805
N: 2LT Joseph (Joe) E. Consolmagno, 0-724020

ENG: Sgt Charles Meriwether
RO: Pvt James Loskot
BT: Pvt R.C. Schmoyer
GNR: Pvt H.l. Langan
TG: Joe Goeppner, Joe
Our Ship and crew were dispatched on Secret Orders from Geiger in Mid-May
1942 - via San Antonio Army Air Depot, and Sacramento Air Depot where
auxiliary tanks were put in the Bombardier and Radio Compartments and half
of the bomb bay. We then flew to Hamilton Field and then, still not knowing
where we were going , took off as lead ship and Lead crew of a flight of 16
B-17E Aircraft. 2 hours out over the ocean, we were told that we were flying
to support a Battle At Midway and then proceed to the South Pacific.
Upon arrival at Hickam, we were assigned to Bellows Field with the 72nd Bomb
Squdron of the 5th Bomb Group and flew missions on not only our plane,
"Uncle Biff " 41-9156, but also on another aircraft, B-17E 41-2415.
(Note: At Geiger Fld, the crew voted to name our aircraft Uncle Biff- my
suggestion, and I was delegated to paint the name on the airplane).
On June 13th Uncle Biff was taken away from us and flown to Midway -
returning to Bellows after our departure. We also flew missions on 41-2415,
until June 23, 1942, when it too was taken away from us and our entire crew
was returned to the US aboard a PAA Clipper to Treasure Island and Hamilton
Field.
From there, we as a crew were sent by train to Wendover Field, Utah,
assigned to the 306th Bomb Group. On July 8th 1942, while flying with
another crew (we all were on pass except him) Burlieffi was flying a nite
training mission on B-17E 41-2604, and crashed in the desert near
Wendover.
Later in July, I was granted a furlough (I had not had a furlough since
joining the Army in 1940, and while I wss on furlough the remainder of the
crew were sent to England with the 306th Bomb Group.
On 9 Nov 42 (Consolmagno was not on flight - was in hospital) the entire
remainder of the crew of Uncle Biff was shot down In 41-24486 "Man-O-War" on
a 306th Bomb Group raid on St Nazaire, ditched in channel - all KIA.
Later, on 5 Apr 43, on a Flight in 42-5431 "Lil Abner", on a 306 raid to
Europe, Joe Consolmagno was shot down over Ghent, Belgium and became a
prisoner of war at a Stalag in Germany for the remainder of the war.

An unusual development of the mission was the report that A/C 545
missing from day’s operations, made a belly landing undamaged 10 miles east
of Brussels with no crew on board . Later reports showed all crew safe . 2
engines out by flak at target -other two failed over Belgium - crew bailed

401st BS: 21 Nov 1944:
A/C 545 piloted by 1st Lt. De Bolt had two engines damaged by flak over the
target. At 1500 feet the other two engines failed. The entire crew bailed
out, Lt. De Bolt jumping at 800 feet. The A/C made a freak perfect landing
in Belgium about 10 miles east of Brussels. All crew members returned safely
