Jack D. Stovall, Jr. The first By Golly crash landed safely in
France on 9 July 1944.
Crew list from the book, but may not have been flying on 1 Aug 1944:

was chosen by Captain West's crew, based on a story from his childhood, as
his mother would not even allow him to say as much as "By Golly". Captain
West never used profane words.
The target for 1 August 1944 was a Rail Road Bridge over river Loire at Les-Ponts-de-Ce

Dog Breath:
When the
original crews were still in training in Pyote, Texas, they would often
enjoy a late night of drinking and dancing at a hall and beer parlor at the
small town of Monahans. One pilot, Herman “Butch” Beuchat, would often have
trouble getting his copilot Everett Phillips out of bed the next morning.
On one particular morning Beuchat was trying to get Phillips to wake up and
Phillips blew in his face. Beuchat replied something like “man, you have
dog breath!” He paused for a bit and said “That’s what we are going to name
our plane”., and they did. Plane #42-31330.

Hell from Heaven Men was B-17F #41-24424.
Lost on 15 March 1943, in the sea, 15-20 miles north of Buna. Following a
mission to Wewak, this aircraft ran out of gasoline, and was
forced to make a water landing in the above position. Three members of the
crew survived, but only two (Dawson and Eberly) are known to have reached
shore. Sgt Freeman decided to allow the tide take him to shore, and he was
not seen again. It is presumed the others went down with the aircraft. The
crash landing took place at about 0230 hours, and it took the two survivors
about 13 hours to reach the shore. MACR:15667

He survived having the entire plexiglass nose blown off the plane during the
bomb run. As lead bombardier, he stayed at the bombsight despite having lost
consciousness for a time and having no gloves for his frozen hands in the
minus 50 degree air blast. He then stayed to man the chin guns during attack
after bombs away.
His plane also returned from another mission having lost both wing tips.
Came home on one engine another time, losing that one during the approach
but landing safely despite ground looping.
He witnessed two bombers in his formation explode simultaneously with
absolutely no debris but a smoke cloud. There were no survivors.
He was wounded during combat, but couldn't bring himself to report it due to
the other more serious injuries he witnessed in the squadron.
His DFC was awarded for leading the Group during a bomb strike using radar,
the result of which was so perfect it was used as an example of the results
possible with H2X radar.

The
crew departed the U.S. about mid-Feb.1945. After refueling in Hawaii,
and very shortly after takeoff, they experienced severe problems with engine
#2. After their attempts to return to the base, which brought up the
fighters, they managed to make it (they found they only had two options: to
go in the drink, or, take the shortest route, which was over Pearl Harbor--a
definite no-no). After a delay of about 2 weeks for a new engine, arrival
and replacement, they headed to Tinian.
There they relinguished their plane and were shuttled to
Guam--North
Field.
Their first mission was to Nagoya, Japan on 10 March 1945. On 15 April they
left for mission # 68 to Kawasaki.
They were neither seen nor heard from after takeoff. MACR # 14273.
A crash site was investigated in Jan. 1949 and three engines were found and
identified as being from # 42-24903, the plane assigned to
my brother. It was located on the bottom of Tokyo Bay about 1200 yards
offshore of Yokohama. This information was never passed on to any of the
family members. Other parts of the plane were also found, but no evidence of
bodies, so the govt. has them classified as "unrecoverable".

William was a Bombardier/navigator. From
Victorville he went to Minot to crew up and then to Bassingborn. His
original crew died in the crash of "Heats On" that crashed and burned on
take off, William was off rotation that day.
Adrienne has spoken with Marion Havelaar about that day. He remembers my
dad grief strongly. Havelaar recommended Dad for his job as Squad lead when
Havelaar was rotated stateside. William was a part of the crew of the
Phantom Fortress and spoke of the experience.

From The Ragged Irregulars of
Bassingbourn – The 91st Bombardment Group in World War II
by Marion H. Havelaar:
"As the Me 410s and Bf 110s continued to slam their rockets into the bomber
formations, more of the aircraft of the 91st were fatally hit.
One of the bombers that went down during this time was the Fortress flown by
Lt. Douglas Harding of the 323rd Bomb Squadron. The right inboard
engine burst into flames then fuel ignited and the fire spread. Harding gave
his crew the order to bail out. Sgt. Hubert(sic) Peterson, the radio
operator, moved to jettison the fuselage door but it stuck. As he backed off
to take a look at the reluctant door, a form came by him in a flash, slammed
into the door, and exited with it. Peterson followed this individual, and in
turn Sgt. Wallace Beyer jumped. All of Harding’s crew managed to get out
successfully and all became prisoners of war." |

Reported MIA
2 Jan 1944, after a B-24 bombing mission over the Marshall Islands.
According to the book Grey Geese Calling (GGC)
two B-24s from the 11th BG (# 42-73026 and 42-73029) were lost on
2 Jan 1944 in the Pacific. John Drenan was listed as a crew member on
42-73029 (at one time).
Probably have served on B-24

p310], plane nick-name : 029
2LT John M. Drenan listed as crew [operational orders, per Penny
LeGrand of 11th BG Assn]
"Drunen" listed as crew [GGC? per OzBob]
Served on plane B-24 #42-40079, plane
nick-name : SATANS KITE II [per family
photo], this plane survived the war
Jack was a
bombardier on a B-24. My mother has a photo of him in front of the B-24
SATANS KITE II, though that plane survived the war. He
graduated bombardier school at Kirtland, class 42-07, and gunnery school at
Hickam in August of '43. He was reported MIA on 2 Jan 1944. His name is
engraved on a column of the National
Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu and notes he was a member of
the 431st BS, 11th BG.
According to the book "11th Bomb Group (H): The Grey Geese" that date would
put him on a daytime bombing mission out of Funafuti to Wotje Atoll in the
Marshall Islands in a formation of 9 bombers. In the 11 BG book his name is
not noted in the roster of members. Other information indicates he
may have been on a mission over Maloelap.
My mother has
a letter - officially ending MIA status - from the Adjutant General's Office
of the War Department dated 16 Jan 1946 containing information from the
members of his formation. They reported that just after the bomber group
passed over their target in the Marshalls (no specific target mentioned) the
formation was attacked by about twelve enemy planes. About 15 minutes later
the enemy scored a direct hit on Jack's plane causing a fire inside the
aircraft. The crew extinguished the fire and the plane continued on its
course with no apparent serious damage. Plane and crew were never seen
again.
