The account of the downing is as follows :
Terni,Italy- Mission No 86- October 14,1943
Nineteen aircraft dropped 228, 500 lb GP bombs on the marshalling yards
at Terni. A number of fires were started and one large explosion was
observed. There was no flak. The formation was attacked by 10-15 E/A
consisting of ME-109s,FW-190s, RE-2001s and one ME-202. The attacks were
aggressive, coming as close as 150 yards.
B-17 42-29581, piloted by 2nd Lt Robert T. McCarty, was lost due to
enemy fighter action. Slightly wounded were S/S Franklin G. Thometz and
Pvt. Kester D. Matheny of the 429th Squadron.

Statement of S/Sgt Roy T. Lantz in B-17 # 42-30133 429th BS, after the
mission. " I first saw plane # 42-29581 when it was going down under
ours. I guess it less than 100 ft below us when it passed and assumed a
position about 4:30 o'clock, 500 to 600 yards to our rear. He flew
straight and level for about two minutes and then apparently started to
come back under our plane for protection from fighters. At this time #
3 engine was smoking badly, but not on fire, nor was it feathered. The
smoke was white. On the way over to our plane, two fighters attacked #
581, in trail from 8 o'clock high. No 3 engine caught fire then., at
which time the plane went into a vertical dive and soon thereafter
completely disintegrated. I estimate the plane was about 2,000 ft below
us, when it went to pieces. I think I saw four or five parachutes open,
none on fire. they opened about the time the plane went to pieces. Later
I saw four or five spots on the water that looked like parachutes. I saw
the fragments of the plane hit the water. The fighters made no more
attacks after they started down.
This is from the 5th Wing History of Aircraft Assigned by Dick Drain.

First Mission: Frankfurt. "Aircraft crashed on take-off.
At about 0935 on 8 February 1944 B-17 42-39977 made a normal take-off
and climbed to catch up with the rest of the formation. When the plane
reached a height of about 500 feet, it suddenly nosed down at angle of
45 degrees and hit the ground about two miles East of the airfield.
Another pilot reported seeing the cockpit on fire. The fire was probably
caused by a piece of electrical equipment, situated near the base of the
top turrett that was alleged prone to ignition. The cockpit was filled
with smoke and fire from the flares and oxygen bottles, and it was
unlikely that the pilot could see his instruments or anything else.
However, he must have regained some control of the aircraft, because he
crased on top tather than into the field. When the bomber hit the
ground, it immediately burst into flames, and two of the 500 lb bombs
adn eleven of the 100 lb bombs exploded. Pictures taken that day show
that apart from one very badly damaged engine, no large pieces survived.
The crew was buried in the War Cemetery at Madingly in Cambridgeshire. "
