Remains Found in New Guinea of WWII Bombardier
SUFFOLK, Va. Human remains found in the wreckage of a World War II bomber in
New Guinea have been identified as a 24-year-old airman who disappeared on a
stormy night in 1943.
The remains of Charles "Buddy" Feucht were identified through DNA testing.
His sister Fern Lord, who had submitted a vial of her blood for DNA
comparison, got the news Thursday.
"It's been so long," said Lord, 83. "Every day, you wake up and wonder if
this is the one."
Feucht, a bombardier aboard a B-24 Liberator, was part of a formation
looking for Japanese ships during a violent thunderstorm when his plane
separated from the others to take a closer look at the water below. He and
the rest of his nine-man crew vanished.
A hunter in the New Guinea jungle discovered the rusted wreckage of the
plane in 2002. He collected a human bone and a handful of metal ID tags and
delivered them to the U.S. Embassy in Papua New Guinea, along with the
plane's tail number and location.
An excavation crew traveled to the site the following year and found more
bones, teeth and ID bracelets inside the shattered cockpit.
Johnny Johnson, a specialist with the Army's Casualty and Mortuary Affairs
operations center in Alexandria, declined Friday to say whether the others
had been identified because other crewmates' families have not been
contacted.
Buddy Feucht was one of two sons in the war. The family's farmhouse in the
small Ohio town of Reynoldsburg was never locked, in case he came home.
Today, Lord and her 85-year-old sister, Mary, are the only remaining members
of his immediate family.
"God kept us on this earth just long enough so we could find out what
happened to him," Lord said. "I don't know whether to laugh or cry."
Feucht's remains will be flown under military escort to Ohio, where he will
be buried with full military honors beside his parents.

June 8, 1944: Target: Lavicomte Sur Rance, France. The target was a 175 foot railroad bridge spanning the river Rance.
This is the report of the Flying Control Officer at
the airfield at Metfield, Suffolk, England.
Fletcher E. Sharp and his crew flying aircraft no.
110169 (Lucky Penny), crashed on the field, killing the entire crew
aboard. "At 0825 B-24 crashed and burned on the field. The aircraft had
circled the field three times with #1 engine feathered. During this time the
control tower tried to contact it on both command frequencies and on
VHF, but no acknowledgement was received. The aircraft made a normal
approach to the runway in use. At a point approximately 300 yards from the
end of the runway, the aircraft pulled up to go around and began to retract its undercarriage. The aircraft pulled up very sharply and to
the left. He attained an altitude of approximately 200 feet and stalled into
the ground. It broke into flames immediately and was completely destroyed. There were two explosions at approximately five minute
intervals following the crash. The fire truck and ambulance were standing
by, but could be of no assistance due to the bomb load aboard. The station Ordnance Officer was immediately sent to the scene of the
crash."
William Reese was not on board the day of the crash of the Lucky Penny on June 8, 1944, but he died later on Nov. 26, 1944
on the mission to Misburg.

From the book 'The Heroes of the 483rd':
On a mission to Campodezzo, Italy, on 8 April 1945. Flying in B-17 44-6733,
they were hit by flak on the bomb run. They lost two engines and fell below
and behind the formation. Before they were able to reach friendly territory,
all engines failed and Dexter made a superb “dead stick” crash landing. They
were immediately captured by German and Italian soldiers.
