From Lynn Gates, a relative:
Claire Gates (photo) was killed along with 18 others
in a Midair collision over Model, CO August 21, 1944. The left their base
in Pueblo, CO and flew south to Trinidad in a formation of 12 to 20
planes. (Different articles have different numbers) The No 3 plane could
not maintain altitude and speed and crashed into the number one
plane. The no 3 plane (the one Claire was on) blew up in mid air, the no
1 plane went into the ground. Below are a couple of the many articles I
have collected on this crash. Last summer I located the crash site and I
believe the crash site of the number 2 plane. Someday when I have a metal
detector and it is cooler, I will go back down and look at it some more.

Gay was KIA on 30 Jan 1944 while flying on
plane 41-24395 named 'I Do Dit' which was shotdown over northern Italy.
Eyewitness RO Pesature:
They were hit by a rocket just after the bombs were dropped and the pilot
was still alive then but after the rocket hit the front of the plane, it
did not turn to the rally point with the rest of the formation. It
was slowly descending, trailing black smoke and was jumped by fighters
after it cleared the formation. After the sixth fighter attack, all
engines were shot out and the surviving crew members bailed out.

According to the MACR 3738, the plane 42-73466 lost Mar 29,
1944, Etean Island, South Pacific was shot down after the bomb drop and
crashed into the sea. A few parachutes were seen, but were strafed on
their way down. The plane sank in 15,000 ft of ocean, only seconds
after what appeared to be a controlled landing. There were no sightings
of survivors.
According to Sam Britt's "The Long Rangers" the a/c
was damaged over target and caught fire. Four chutes were seen to open
but appeared on fire. One crewmen went out the top hatch and hit the
tail. This was supposed to be their last mission. The enlisted men
were normally part of Lt. Joe Binder's crew but returned ahead of him
from rest leave and were assigned to fly with Lt. Francis for the Truk
mission.

KIA 1 April 1945 with B-29 44-69666 on a night
mission to the Nakajima aircraft plant in Tokyo (MACR 14230). The
plane actually crashed in Tokyo Minamitama Kooricho 790, Honmachida,
Tamachi.
Crew (all killed) were pilot LT Edward Law, 2LT
Gerould L. Giddings, Sgt Harry McMillen, 2LT Donald Van Dever, TSgt
Raymond C. Richmond, Sgt Robert H. Nead, Sgt Leonard McNeill, (?)
Maurice Myers and (?) Thadeus J. Pasternak.
Gerhardt and 9 others parachuted safely. All
were captured and transferred to the Tokyo Military Prison at the Kempei
Tai Hq adjacent to the north side of the Imperial Palace.
Law was the only man to die in the crash. All the other men were
captured and sent to the Kempei Tai Headquarters in Tokyo. The Central
Fire Control man, Staff Sgt Ray Hopper was later sent to Omori. He would
be the sole survivor.
On the night of 26 May 1945, upon notice of the forthcoming raid, all
civilian prisoners were removed from their cells and moved to the safety
of open field shelters. The Japanese locked the Allied prisoners in
their cramped cells. Generally, 16 to 19 men would be placed into these
vermin and filth covered cells, approximately 2.5 x 3 x 2.4 meters.
Incendiary bombs ignited the building. Those trying to escape were shot
or slashed to death by swords. Gerhardt perished that night. His
remains were cremated and disposed of by the Japanese. Somewhere between
60 to 150 men died in the locked cells.
Those responsible were tried as war criminals, convicted and hanged.

NEWS RELEASES from the United States Department of Defense

Airmen Missing In Action From WWII are Identified
The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced
today that the remains of eleven U.S. airmen, missing in action from
World War II, have been identified and are being returned to their
families for burial with full military honors.
They are:
Capt. Thomas C. Paschal, El Monte, CA
1LT Frank P. Giugliano, New York, NY
1LT James P. Gullion, Paris, TX
2LT Leland A. Rehmet, San Antonio, TX
2LT John A. Widsteen, Palo Alto, CA
S/S Richard F. King, Moultrie, GA
S/S William Lowery, Republic, PA
S/S Elgin J. Luckenbach, Luckenbach, TX
S/S Marion B. May, Amarillo, TX
Sgt. Marshall P. Borofsky, Chicago, IL
Sgt. Walter G. Harm, Philadelphia, PA
The group remains of the entire crew are to be buried today at Arlington
National Cemetery near Washington, DC, as are the individual remains of
each man with the exception of King, Giugliano and Widsteen, whose
families
have elected hometown burials.
On April 16, 1944, Paschal and Widsteen were piloting a B-24J Liberator
with the other nine men aboard. The aircraft was returning to
Nadzab, New Guinea after bombing enemy targets near Hollandia. The
plane was
last seen off the coast of the island flying into poor weather.
The loss was investigated following the war and a military board
concluded that the aircraft had been lost over water and was
unrecoverable.
In early 2001 a team of specialists from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting
Command (JPAC) interviewed a native of Papua New Guinea who claimed to
have found the aircraft crash and recovered identification media for May
and Harm. The team surveyed the site in 2002 and found wreckage that
matched Paschal's aircraft tail number along with human remains. They
also took custody of remains previously collected by the villager.
Later that year, two additional JPAC teams excavated the crash site and
recovered additional human remains and crew-related artifacts.
Identification tags were found for Luckenbach, May and Paschal. Other
crew-related materials found were consistent with items used by the Army
Air Forces around 1944.
Mitochondrial DNA obtained from dental and bone samples was one of the
forensic tools used by JPAC scientists and Armed Forces DNA
Identification Laboratory specialists to identify the airmen.
For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to
account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO website at

Association website:
28 Sept 44
- Pilot: 1Lt Charles G. Glasgow, 427BS
B17G: #44-89335 (No name) - Mission to Magdeburg, Germany. B-17
crashed near Heerte/Salzgitter, southwest of Brunswick, Germany.
Bombardier 2Lt Homer W. Goff
parachuted safely and was captured by German civilians and taken to their
village. The local police station was called. A German police officer
arrived and took Lt Goff through a path in the woods and later told
everyone that Lt Goff was shot trying to escape. A post-war autopsy showed
that he was shot in the back of the head at close range. The Police
Officer was found guilty of killing Lt Goff in a post-war war crimes
trial.
From 303rd BG Association website:
B-17 #44-8335 was a brand new B-17G-60-VE. Manufactured by Vega Aircraft
Company in Burbank, CA. Was delivered to the USAAF on 15 August 1944,
arrived in England 07 September 1944 and was assigned to the 427th
BS/303rd BG(H) on 26 September 1944. Just two days later, it was lost on
28 September 1944 on a combat mission to bomb the Fredd Krupp factory at
Magdeburg, Germany. The 303rd lost eleven B-17s on this mission due to
heavy flak and intense German fighter attacks. #44-8335 was on her first
combat mission. The Pilot, Lt Charles C. "Glenn" Glasgow, a West
Point graduate was also on his first combat mission and was thrown out of
the B-17 when it exploded, after being hit by flak. He was the only crew
survivor. He managed to parachute to safety and became a POW. In 1948 a
mass grave of 35 Russians were disinterred near Heerter Holz about 20km
SSW of Brunswick. A hollow in the ground near the Russian mass grave
proved to be another mass grave in which an American body was found. The
U.S. Graves team then discovered the remains of the seven additional
crewmen from #44-8335. They were temporarily reburied at Neuville and
later in other American cemeteries in Europe or returned to the USA for
final burial. |

Became a POW on 11 Jan 1944 when his plane
Trudy was shot down. The ship hit by flak in the right wing.
They were flying in the lead position after the bomb run. After
flying for some time with the right wing on fire on the underside, no
immediate action to blow out the flames by diving the ship was noted.
Finally, the right wing tank became on fire and ship was then seen going
down in flames. Other crews observed that the plane was near the
Dutch, German border. Also, the other crews saw an apparent struggle
to keep the Fort level, but to no avail. Two chutes observed as the
plane plunged downward.POW at

The original crew came together at Salt Lake City, UT, and shipped to Rapid
City, SD, 29 Nov 1943. While at Rapid City, Lindholm and Hewitt joined the crew.
The crew shipped to MacDill Field, Tampa, FL, 6 Jan 1944, and became part of the
483rd BG. Orders of 9 March 1944 assigned B-17 42-38210 to the Preston crew.
They flew to Italy by the southern route. Only H. C. Johnston, Lindholm and
Cieslak of Preston’s regular crew flew with him. The other six men, Day, Rozycki,
Pecotte, J. W. Johnston, Sacks and Mauldin, a charter member of the 18th
Observation Squadron, were key ground personnel.
B-17 42-38210 was assigned to the 99th BG as
soon as they arrived in Italy. The plane was MIA 12 April 1944. Gresham,
Cooper, Cline, Brown, Toutant, and Pierce went overseas with the convoy. Fowler,
Hewitt and Isaacs did not go overseas with the 483rd. Brown was originally part
of the Phillips crew, and Toutant was a member of the Promberger crew at Rapid
City. Records suggest Pierce joined the 483rd at MacDill. Those listed as KIA
were all flying with Preston in B-17 42-5786 on a mission to Nis, Yugoslavia, 15
April 1944.
The plane received a direct flak hit, was engulfed in flames and the right wing
came off. An alert 483rd photographer captured this moment, providing one of the
most horrific photos of World War II. B-17 42-5786 was a war-weary that had
served with the 99th BG. This was the first crew and plane lost in combat by the
483rd.
Documents confirming Toutant’s death have yet
to be located. No parachutes were observed, but only nine bodies were recovered
from the plane. Members of the 840th Squadron who were consulted indicated
there were no survivors.
