LT F.H. Matthew, leading Lt. E.R. Norton and
apparently lost, turned to join Lt. Col. Purinton's flight, but Purinton too
had no idea where he was.
Forty five miles into Holland he decided to turn for home and his navigator,
Lt. Jefferis, gave him a course of 2700. Almost simultaneously Jefferis
reported that he had sighted the target. Bombs were dropped on what they
thought the the Haarlem works, but it was in fact a gas holder in the
suburbs of Amsterdam.
Having climbed to bombing altitude several Marauders failed to reduce height
as they headed for the coast. Unknown to the crews they were heading
directly towards Ijmuiden and its murderous flak barrage.
Purinton's bomber was hit at 12:12, but he managed to
ditch offshore near a fishing boat, manned by Germans. Jefferis was killed
in the crash, but the rest of
the crew were rescued to become prisoners of war.

crew failed to drop their bombs on target. Shortly afterwards one engine was
feathered and the bombs jettisoned. When No 3 and 4 were out and No 2 nearly
out, all bailed out. The B-17 crashed 800 m S.of St. Pierremong near German
farm Antoine. S/Sgt Harold C. Golub was killed when his chute failed to
open. S/Sgt Golub was found in the forest near the crash site. S/Sgt Golub

Became a POW on 29 April 1944 when his B-17G 42-31217,
ROWDY REBEL was lost to fighters enroute to Berlin. Crashed near
Eggenstedt, GER. MACR 4249.
From Elwyn 'Stub' Warfle's book, "One Lucky Bastard" has an 11 page chapter
titled "Berlin Massacre".
Meanwhile, things were heating up in the lead squadron. Lt. Harold M.
Paris, #217, Rowdy Rebel, was hit hard in the engines. With one on
fire, he pulled out of his element lead position and bailed out his crew
near Magdeburg, once the fire threatened the wing area. The ship exploded
seconds after the last man jumped. They too were taken prisoners, with some
members injured.

The plane named Lassie-Come-Home was shot down on 13
May 1944. Primary target Poznan. Diverted to Stettin due to overcast.
1LT Robert M. Dunn, Jr. was flying as High Squadron leader southwest of
Stettin when Lassie-Come-Home at 15:30 hours was attacked by German
fighters and a fire broke out in the left wing. Dunn left the formation and
ordered the crew to bail out.
Tail gunner S/S James T. Miller left through the tail hatch while Waist
gunner S/S Edwin G. Ayres and Ball turret gunner S/S John Fode left through
the rear door. Bombardier 2LT Harry D. Jensen, Navigator 2LT George Krassner,
Co-pilot 2LT William H. Churchill Jr., Engineer T/S John T. Whitelaw, Radio
operator T/S Evar W. Anderson and Pilot 1LT Robert M Dunn Jr. left through
the bomb bay.
They all landed safely near Gingst on Rügen at approximately 15:35 and were
captured by the Germans and taken to Fliegerhorst Bug-Rügen except Dunn who
was taken to Fliegerhorst Papow. On 14 May 1944 they were all shipped off to
Dulag Luft in Oberursel.
Lassie-Come-Home continued north until over the Danish island of
Sjælland where it circled for about an hour before it crashed in Bjælkerup
town where it destroyed a small house to end up hitting one corner of Store
Heddinge Hospital. Luckily no one was hurt.
Since no flyers were found it was first thought that they had escaped and
later believed that they had bailed out over Sweden.
On Rügen the Germans found the crew but no aircraft and it was believed that
it had crashed into the Baltic Sea.
After interrogation at Dulag Luft the officers were sent to Stalag Luft III
Sagan while the sergeants were sent to Stalag VIIA Moosburg. They all
returned to USA after the war.

Kimura's report:
The B-29 was caught by searchlights from below. I approached it to
within 20 or 30 meters, suddenly everything became white because of the
reflected light off the big fuselage of the enemy plane, which filled my
gunsight. It started to climb in fear of being rammed by me. I
did not hesitate, I started to fire and I could tell that I hit it.
The nose came down slowly and it started to spin, I saw one piece of fin
come off. |
