KIA on 1 Dec 1943, near Cassel, FRA
MACR 1578
Boeing B-17F-55-BO, Flying Fortress, #42-29506
code: VE – A,
Full Boost! aka, Ye White Swan.
Shot down by flak, crashed near Cassel, France. Last sighted by S/S Richard
E. Ingmire, 35374309
From the information of an after action report written and filed by 2LT
Marvin E. Dille the bombardier of the lead aircraft of the second element,
it seems likely that the aircraft of Lt. Duncan was hit by flak not long
after crossing the coast inbound to the target. This is the exact wording of
that report.
1. Lt. Duncan had been flying rather erratically throughout most of the
mission after we went into the enemy coast. The tail gunner of Lt. Clore’s
ship said that Lt. Duncan would bank sharply one way and then the other and
was not in formation (position) over one minute at a time. Later on after
the bombs were dropped, Lt. Duncan had a fire in No.1 engine. This was
extinguished in a short time. We were still in Germany. About one minute
after the fire was put out, Lt. Duncan dropped out of formation still being
on course but loosing altitude. He was seen to stay on course until he
reached the enemy coast, where he was last seen to turn about and head back
toward Germany.
2. Lt. Duncan was flying No. 2 position in the second element of the
Squadron that our crew was leading.
From the Individual Casualty Questionaire’s which were filled out by the
surviving crew members after the war, it seems that most of those who died
were either already dead when the aircraft exploded, were killed in the
explosion, or did not have their parachutes attached to their harness at the
time of the explosion and fell to their death. This is the information from
those reports.
2Lt. Harry Allchin, co-pilot, did not bail out, was in his pilot seat when
aircraft blew up, had told everyone “to put on chutes, we might have to
ditch boys…lighten ship except for guns.” He went down with aircraft or was
blown from ship. It was his fifth mission.
2Lt. Mac W. Huffman, navigator, did not bail out, was in the nose and
thought to be already dead. He had flown one other mission to Dusseldorf /
Cologne, Germany.
2Lt. Robert G. Kessler, bombardier, did not bail out, was in the nose and
thought to be dead according to S/Sgt. Roy Mattson, previous missions flown
unknown.
T/Sgt. Vinal L. Wade, engineer / top turret gunner, did not bail out, was
injured and on the flight deck at the top turret when aircraft exploded. He
had flown three or four missions.
T/Sgt. Edward V. Doherty, radio operator / gunner, did not bail out, was
last seen lying in radio room injured. He had flown one previous mission to
Solinger, Germany.
S/Sgt. Leon B. Jeffers, ball turret gunner, did not bail out, was already
dead and lying next to ball turret when aircraft exploded. He had called for
help when his oxygen line had been shot out. A crewmate started to give him
oxygen when he was hit by shrapnel. He had flown four or five prior
missions.
S/Sgt. Morris A. Wall, right waist gunner, was wearing parachute when
aircraft exploded, he fell clear of wreckage and pulled his rip cord. He
reported that he saw two other parachutes.

42-102645 was one of six aircraft lost on a mission to
Karlsruhe on 9 Aug 1944. Actually the primary target was Munich, but due to
cloud cover the 12 aircraft headed for Karlsruhe. They were all downed
by enemy fighters. MACR: 8067.
According to information received years ago from Herman Steck, who was on
board 42-37881, and in John Craven's book "The 305th Bomb Group in Action",
the crew list was:
P: F/O Clayton E. Child
CP: F/O Kenneth V. French
N: 2LT Henry F. Colt, Jr.
B: F/O Harold F. Kilmer
RO: S/S John B. Dubinskas KIA
ENG: S/S Andrew E. Kuhn
BT: Sgt John R. Waldren KIA
RW: Sgt Grady Lucas, Jr. KIA
TG: Sgt Jerry R. McEldowney KIA
Herman Steck's notes to me listed the radio operator's last name as
Dubinsky. The other discrepancy between the two sources is in Herman
Steck's information, the tail gunner is listed as KIA, but not in the book.
I do not have the actual MACR as I've been focused on my great-uncle's
aircraft, but I hope this has helped.
Bill Donald's book "John Burn One-Zero-Five". He identifies this aircraft
with designation KY-A (366th BS), crashed in Segelsen, Germany, 4 evaded, 4
KIA, 1 POW on 9 Aug 1944 en route to Karlsruhe.

A portion of his obituary:
Alfred Thomas Knies, Jr. Feb. 14, 1924 - Oct. 23, 2006 The Reverend
Alfred Thomas Knies, Jr. died peacefully on October 23, 2006, surrounded
by his family and friends. Ted touched so many lives with his loving
compassion, counsel, guidance, and wisdom and he will be greatly missed.
He reflected to many a life well led. Ted was born in Austin, Texas, on
Valentine's Day 1924, to Alfred Thomas and Norine Blair Knies. He
graduated from Austin High School in 1941, and enrolled at The
University of Texas. When he volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps on
June 3, 1943, his education was interrupted. Ted was commissioned as a
2LT and was a bombardier on a B-24 in the 456th Bomb Group,
headquartered in Cerignola, Italy. While on a bombing run on December
26, 1944, his plane was shot down. Allied forces rescued the crew and
they returned to combat. On his 13th mission, Ted was again forced down
behind enemy lines in March 1945, and became a POW in Germany until he
was liberated on May 5, 1945 by General Patton's 13th Armored Division.
After the war, Ted completed his college education at the University of
Texas with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He and his family then
moved to Houston to pursue this career. Ted's faith and desire to serve
the Lord led him to answer the Lord's calling to the priesthood. He
entered Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia in 1959,
and he received his Master of Divinity in 1962. Ted was ordained as an
Episcopal priest and served the Dioceses of Texas and West Texas for 27
years. Father Ted was a pastor and leader to the congregations and
communities of Burnet/Marble Falls, Houston, Huntsville, and Pharr. He
and his wife, Martha, retired to Wimberley in 1989, where Ted continued
to serve the ministry by acting as interim priest in several Texas
communities, including his home church, St Stephen's - Wimberley. |

Citation for Korson:
Paul J. Korson, O-2063253, Second Lieutenant, Army Forces, United States
Army. For gallantry in action while serving as bombardier during a
penetration mission over Germany, 30 November 1944. Shortly before starting
the bombing run, an exploding anti-aircraft shell severely wounded
Lieutenant Korson. Fully aware that bombing accuracy depended on each man
performing his assigned duty, he remained at his position and calmly issued
the necessary instructions to the pilot. Though bleeding profusely and
greatly handicapped, he refused the navigator's offer of first aid and
placed a perfect bomb pattern on the target. Not until he called for
assistance in closing the bomb bay doors did he make it known his condition
to the pilot and submit to medical treatment. His fortitude, courage and
tenacity of purpose on this occasion served as an inspiration to the entire
crew.

On 29 June 1943, Consolidated B-24E # 41-28423 crashed at
16:18 MWT while attempting to land at Alamogordo Army Air Base,
Alamogordo, New Mexico, killing ten fliers and seriously injuring
assistant engineer SSgt. J.V. Staffiera.
A thunderstorm was approaching the field as the
airplane approached to land on Runway 3. The pilot overshot on his
attempt to land on Runway 3, causing him to go around. As the airplane
flew the pattern for Runway 3, the wind changed and favored Runway 7.
As the storm approached the field, winds increased from 7 knots to 35
knots, cross wind for Runway 3. The tower radioed the airplane in order
advise of the changing wind condition and clear for Runway 7. The tower
was unable to contact the airplane. The pilot failed to land on the
second attempt. Moments later the control tower lost power. The
airplane attempted to land on Runway 3 for a third time and again failed
because of the severe crosswind.
On the final go around, a powerful rain squall moved
into the pattern area and the tower lost visual contact with the ship.
The airplane was enveloped by heavy rain and
rocked by severe turbulence, causing the pilot to lose control of the
ship. The airplane crashed about one mile northwest of the field.
