On the 24 August 1944, the B-17 "GRAHAM CRACKER", S/N
43-37593, left for a bombing mission of oil plants in Merseberg, GER.
OWEN LEE GRAHAM was the pilot, HOWARD B. PARKER was the bombardier. As the
plane was headed back, it was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire. Due to the
heavy damage to "Graham Cracker," it crashed in Barnstaedt (west of
Meresburg) at 12:30.
Seven of the crew members were found dead, two had
parachuted out before the crash (they were captured by the Germans). The
seven dead crew members were buried on 25 August 1944 in the Village
Cemetery at Barnstaedt. In 1945 the the bodies were disinterred and
reinterred in the U.S. Military Cemetery at Margraten, Holland.
In 1948 the U.S. Government notified the next of kin of
Armed Forces buried overseas the option of leaving the remains buried in
American Military Cemeteries or returned to the U.S. for final burial.
Howard B. Parker's remains were shipped to the U.S. for burial in Marietta,
GA. The final burial took place on 26 AUGUST 1949 with full military honors.

In May 1945 two accidents took place during special training
missions for 344th BG, causing the loss of life to the crews of both
aircraft.
On May 13th 1945 a two-ship formation flew on a low-level formation
navigation problem. The pilot of the lead ship, 1LT Doming, Jr., stated that
he had advised 2LT Whitehead, pilot off the ill-fated plane, not to attempt
to fly formation due to the turbulence of the air that day. LT Whitehead
dropped back and to the right but kept is sight of the lead plane. As they
flew along, the Waist Gunner of LT Doming's aircraft stated to him over the
interphone that he could see LT Whitehead buzzing villages and surrounding
terrain. During the process of buzzing, LT Whitehead's right wing of the
aircraft struck a tree, causing the airplane to swing to the right. His
altitude at this time was so low, he was unable to right the plane, and the
right wing struck the ground at a great speed, causing the crash. Parts of
the plane were strewn over a great forward distance, carrying the pilot and
the following crew members to their death:

December 19, 1944, Omura Mission #22, 42-63452
had fuel and engine trouble and crew had to bail out.
42-63452 flew the "Hump" on 12/19/44 from Piardoba, India to Kiunglai,
China. Then set out from China for Omura, Japan and experienced no
difficulty until they had turned back from Omura because of cloud cover. The
formation headed for Shanghai, the alternate target. About 90 minutes
west of Omura they left the formation due to #2 engine failure. After
several course corrections they had a fuel transfer problem. With no
gas was given the bail out signal from the AC after crossing the Han River.
The enlisted men landed on the west bank, just in the foothills. The
officers bailed out immediately after the enlisted men and landed farther
west and higher in the foothills.
The crew was rescued by U.S. Navy Group China (SACO) and Chinese Nationalist
Army and Chinese peasant farmers.

EXTRA Passenger - Capt John P. Bowman was an Air Commander so he was extra
on the crew that day.
From MACR 2189 REPORT:
The plane's name: Queenie. On Nov. 13, 1943 they were to bomb the
city of Bremen in Germany. The plane was shot down by German
aircraft. The events: At one point the attacked aircraft was out of
formation with the other planes flying. The pilot realized his error and it
was thought he turned back to rejoin the group of planes. At that time the
B-24 was attacked by enemy aircraft. The #2 engine was on fire and the
plane went into a cloud in a flat spin with 2 chutes span. One of the wings
may have been gone. The other planes in the formation could not tell 100%
the events due to poor visibility and weather conditions. A report filed
Jan. 12, 1944 by Capt. John J. Hinch after investigating.

He also flew as a bombardier in the South
Pacific theater, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for putting a
Japanese destroyer in "sinking condition."
The following article outlines the mission:
Jap Destroyer Bagged By Ralph Pitman, Mayfield
Following is a dispatch from General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters in the
far Pacific in which Lieut. Ralph Pitman, Mayfield, a bombardier is credited
with bagging a Jap destroyer. LT Pitman, a graduate of the Mayfield High
School, was a star in football and basket ball at the high school and at
Western Teachers College, Bowling Green.
The account follows:
The Navy reported yesterday that American fliers bombed the Japanese on
Kiska, eight times in a single day in the most sustained “dawn to dusk”
assault yet launched to blast the enemy from the Aleutians.
Formations of Liberator heavy bombers, Mitchell medium bombers and Lighting
fighters carried out the assaults, which took place April 2. Hits were
observed in the target area as the Americans plastered the Jap positions
with high explosives. All the U.S. planes returned safely from their “round
the clock” pounding of the enemy.
An Associated Press Dispatch from “somewhere in Papua New Guinea” yesterday
described the sinking by Flying Fortresses of two Japanese cruisers and a
destroyer and damaging of four other destroyers at Kavieng, New Ireland,
which had been reported briefly by General MacArthur’s headquarters in
Australia earlier in the day. MacArthur’s air force swept virtually every
major point of Japanese strength from Dutch New Guinea to Kavieng, except
Rabual, in the twenty-four hours of operations covered by yesterday’s
communiqué.
2LT Ralph Pitman of Mayfield, Ky., a bombardier, was credited with leaving
one destroyer in a sinking condition in the attack at Kavieng. The
eight attacks on Kiska reported yesterday brought to a total of forty-eight
the number of aerial assaults within approximately one month’s time – an
average of more than one a day.

MACR #1716
Narrative from First Over Germany; A History of the 306th Bombardment Group,
by Russell Strong. © by the author:
"As a fighter came across the front of Punchy it raked the plane, killing
1LT James E. Winter and his copilot, 2LT Robert W. Ashley. The plane
was shattered by cannon fire that was so intense it tore off the number 1
and 2 engines and almost ripped off a wing. The plexiglass nose was
destroyed and 1LT Ralph K. Pringle, bombardier, tumbled out. His chute
was on, but he opened it too soon and the canopy caught on the jagged edges
of the plexiglass and he rode the plane down to his death."
2LT Robert F. Jones, navigator, T/S David M. Hovis, engineer and
S/S Otis F. Thomas, tail gunner, were the only survivors.
