Arthur J CB 43-18     His B-24 was shot down on 1 Sept 1944.  He parachuted safely and ws captured by the Japanese.

According to the Japanese Schumacher died in a Philippine POW camp.  However, research by Katherine Rasdorf shows no record of him in a camp.  There are also no records of him on any boat that transported POW's to the Philippines.  It is her belief that he was executed by the Japanese on Palau.

"Rough and Ready (42-52402) was being flown by Lt. Paul Kirkland and crew.  Within seconds of the first burst of flak their plane took a devastating burst between the #3 engine and fuselage opening a huge hole near the cockpit.   Kirkland and copilot Michael Voytish fought the dying Liberator for enough time so the crew could bail out."

Scolnick Nathan nmi MI 42-12 491 341 Scolnick was one of 8 brothers to serve during WWII.  During the period March 1943 to 3 April 1944 he flew 82 combat missions and 382 combat hours.  Nathan was sent back to the States on 3 April 1944 by direct orders of General Claire Chennault and was retired 20 Oct 1944 with "total disability".  His mother, Esther Scolnick, was named 'Mother of the Year' in 1945.  The Scolnick family was one of the four largest families to serve during the war.  Nathan received New York State's Conspicuous Service Cross #922 from Governor Thomas E. Dewey. (CH 6/94)

From Mike Spenser:
He has the Distinguished Flying Cross and his mother, my grandmother was Congressional Mother Of The Year. She was 4'10", had 11 children and I have a smart picture of her with Elenore Roosevelt Towering over her giving her the award. He is part of the 4th largest family of servicemen/woman in the US servives with 9 (8 brothers) all in the service at the same time. All survived and came back. My grandmother got her award for selling war bonds. not for the amount of sons in the war!!!

My dad has several letters from General Chenault himself and I have a picture of him with Madame Chiang Kai-shek. There are several articles from the Congressional Journal about the Scolnick family. He was shot down several times and has the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with 3 cluster as well. It also mentions a Presidential citation in some of the articles.

The Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that three airmen missing in action from World War II have been identified and are being returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are 2d Lt. David J. Nelson, Chicago, Ill.; Tech. Sgt. Henry F. Kortebein, Maspeth, N.Y.; and Tech. Sgt. Blake A. Treece, Jr., Marshall, Ark., all U.S. Army Air Forces. These men are to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C. on Thursday, as are the group remains of their aircrew which was lost during World War II.
Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men in their hometowns to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

On August 8, 1944, Nelson, Kortebein and Treece departed an allied air base in England in their B-17G Flying Fortress with six other crewmen aboard. Their mission was to bomb enemy targets near Caen, France. The aircraft was seen to explode and crash after being struck by enemy flak near the village of Lonlay l’Abbaye, south of Caen. The other six members of the crew were 1st Lt. Jack R. Thompson; 2nd Lts. Charles Bacigalupa and Charles Sherrill; and Sgts. Richard R. Collins, Gerald F. Gillies and Warren D. Godsey. The hometowns of these six are not available.

German forces and French villagers living near the crash site recovered some of the remains of the crew and buried them nearby. Advancing U.S. forces found additional remains of the rest of the crew. Six of the nine crewmen ultimately were identified, but Nelson, Kortebein and Treece remained unaccounted-for.

In August 2002, a team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) operating in Luxembourg was informed that a local French aircraft wreckage hunting group (Association Normande du Souvenir Aerien 39/45) had located a crash site near Lonlay l’Abbaye. The JPAC team surveyed the site, excavated it in July 2004 and recovered human remains, personal effects and crew-related materials from amid the wreckage17. Also found were six unexploded 250-pound bombs.

Later that year, a French explosive ordnance disposal team turned over a bone fragment to the U. S. Defense Attaché in Paris. It was found by French technicians working to secure the site where the bombs had been found.
Among other forensic identification tools, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA in the identification of the remains of the three, matching DNA sequences from maternal relatives.

After Pilot Weaver was killed after the bombs were dropped, by Zero fighter fire, Shields was temporarily assigned for 1 or 2 missions with the Jolly Rogers from the 90th Bomb Group.  They were short bombardiers.  Capt Morgan was his
pilot.  They had lost their bombardier to illness.  Then, Dad was assigned back to the 403rd squadron.  90th Bomb Group with pilot Morgan picture also attached...

From an interview by 1LT Ernest N. Morgan :

Most heroic thing I saw or did:
The records are not complete, but it appears that I, and my crew, are here now because of quick action by the engineer on Lt Weaver's crew, who
recovered the plane when Lt Weaver was killed by Jap interceptor shot that came just under his flak vest. Their plane grazed out #3 prop and then
recovered. I have not discovered his name yet.

Shields bombed a ship in Hong Kong harbor, splitting the bow from the stern with two 1000-lb bombs, having dropped 5 in total, running the bombs perpendicular to the ship's path. The ship blew apart, and sank in minutes, said some reports.  It was a target of opportunity, because his initial target, another ship in the harbor, was already hit.

Heber H VV 43-16 332 94 Squadron Lead Bombardier
He flew 35 Operational Missions from June 5, 1944 through October 17th, 1944, most of them aboard the "Athenian Avenger II".

From Heber:
a) On the 6th mission we were dropping guns to the French Freedom Fighters in  southern France at a very low altitude (1500 ft) and were attacked by a lot of ME-109's.

b) The 12th mission found us bombing submarine pens at Kiel, Germany, and we were under heavy German fighter attacks off and on for an hour or so on our way home.

c) On 18th mission, July 31, 1944, (while in a substitute aircraft, the "Hello Mr. Maier"), Smith's aircraft sustained significant damage while departing the target area over Munich, Germany. The aircraft made a belly landing in the North Sea and all crew members were rescued by British Air Sea Rescue.

d) On our 24th mission one of our own planes accidentally dropped five or six bombs on our plane, leading to the death of our tail gunner.

e) Our 30th mission found us bombing Limberg, Germany, and we saw our very first German jet fighter after going through some very intense flak.  After returning home we counted well over 125 holes in our aircraft.

Received the Air Medal and 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross, and is also a member of The Goldfish Club.

Included here is a photograph of the crew in Dalhart, Texas, taken 2 or 3 weeks before they left for England.

It was long believed to shot down in Germany but much later it was found that it was shot down near Nepomuk in the Czech Republic.

There was one survivor named Raymond A. Noury who is still alive and lives somewhere in  Connecticut.  The people
of Nepomuk area discovered the plane and saved as many of the artifacts as possible and hid them from the Germans and later the Soviets.  After the fall of the Soviet block they
collected the artifacts and created presentation in a local museum.   The people of Nepomuk and the surrounding area had a memorial service on the 60th anniversary of the crash.

Stevenson James A VV 43-16 615 401 James was from Butte, MT and his serial # was O-759991.  He was on a B-17 that crashed on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea on 24 May 1944.  The entire crew escaped to Sweden.  MACR 4957.  View photo.

James daughter, Shirley Wallis provided the following: My father returned to the United States after his escape to Sweden, and interviews in England. He worked as a bombardier instructor  until his release from the service in October 1945.  He died of lung cancer on 14 Apr 1981.

Dad was a sensitive, witty, fun-loving individual with a wonderful sense of humor. The Pilot, John (Jack) Whiteman tells me that once they were safely in Sweden, the crew would be out to lunch...the Gestapo sitting closely by, eavesdropping, hoping to gather information. Apparently my Dad would sing some obnoxious song about Der Fuhrer, sending the Gestapo into a stifled rage. When he completed the song, Dad's crewmembers would cheer and clap. Annoyed, the Gestapo would get up and leave. Since discovering my Dad's crewmembers in July 2002 I have corresponded regularly with two of them via E-mail,as well as with Erik Dyreborg, author of a book about the crash landing and escape of the "BTO in the ETO" crew. In late August 2002 my husband surprised me with a flight on a B-17! I got to spend quite a bit of time in the bombardier's seat. It was terrific!

Leading Lady from the 500th Bomb Group piloted by Major Wilbur "Barney" Hurlbutt was rammed between the nose and the No. 3 engine over Okazaki, southeast of Nagoya, by Lt. Minoru Shirota of the 55th Sentai. Sgt. Harold T. Hedges, the tail gunner and only survivor reported their last seconds:

"We slid out of formation and fell 5,000 feet. We leveled out for just a second, the right side exploded and the aircraft rolled over on her it's back and went into a spin. Just as it rolled over it threw me out of my escape hatch. I opened my chute right after I went out and I was watching the ship spin down. Two Japanese fighters came in strafing me and I lost sight of the ship. That was the last time I saw it or the crew."

Japanese sources say "probably the result of an accidental collision rather then an intentional ramming. Shirota parachuted out but died of his injuries the following day."

From other sources:
1. Williams, Owens and Herbert are all buried in the US Military Cemetery in Florence, Italy

2. Valls and Sylvester were classified as FOD (Finding of Death) (the National Archives listing of WWII casualties)

3. Chilton and Corona must have parachuted to safety because they were captured, interned in P.O.W. camps and survived the war. ________________________________
