Author of 'One Lucky Bastard'
Mt.
Vernon Publishing, Mt. Vernon, VA (2002)
Hardbound, 388 pages
Stories and analyses of the great air battles fought over Europe by a
two-tour 447th bombardier. Many wartime photos of named aircrews, their
fate, their planes and targets bombed. A special remembrance to those lost
in combat. Features the "lost" boat crews -- the 18 original combat air
crews (including the author's) who headed to England in 1943 by sea, and
largely omitted from other historical studies. |

He died on March 6, 1944 when his plane, the B17 My Darling
Also, 42-31578, was rammed by a German Focke Wulf 190. The plane crashed.
Two crew members could bail out but the other eight members were all killed.
Just north of Magdeburg, two or three Fw190s from Sturrnstaffel 1 attacked
My Darling Also from six o'clock and set the No.3 engine ablaze.
This staffel was known to operate a special heavily-armored variant of the
Fw190 which was capable of absorbing a tremendous amount damage. Other crews
in the formation reported seeing gunners from the ship achieve several hits
on their attackers and in particular the leading fighter. Its pilot dead or
severely wounded, the Focke Wulf careered on into the Fortress, knocked off
its right stabilizer and exploded into a cartwheel of flame. The huge
fireball engulfed both attacker and victim and a searing wall of flame also
caught a following fighter. It too burst into flames and all three aircraft
went down with My Darling Also sliding away apparently still under some
degree of control.
The inside of the plane was a shambles of twisted metal, shattered
equipment, severed cables and at least three wounded crewmen. As the B17
began to tumble and spin through the air the massive forces of centrifuge
took control and only two men were able to claw their way out. Waist gunner
Dana Morse and tail gunner Walter Davis were the fortunate survivors, all
the rest of the crew of ten perished.

Harry Wetzel, bombardier was assigned to Crew 333, Pilot E
Burroughs, at Westover Field. Upon completion of training at Westover, our
crew was transferred to Langley Field, VA for radar training approx Sept 19,
1944. Upon arrival it was discovered they did not have barrack space
for the entire crew so we were given a new aircraft (44-48828) sent over to
Italy, with the promise that Harry would catch up with us after completion
of his training. Instead, Harry was shipped to a Group somewhere in the
vicinity of Foggia. I recall him mentioning "Alan's Irish Orphans".

The plane was
the B-25J 43-27564, hit over the Fado Viaduct on 28 May 1944.
According to
the witness, the plane went down in the first days of June or last days of
May of 1944, coming to the north and heading to south-east. Above the
village of Frassinedolo, ITA. The plane make a large left turn, and
four men bailed out. Then, the plane put down the nose and crashed into a
hill called "tana della volpe" (fox nest). The airmen were helped by the
witness to crossing the Secchia River and joining the partisan forces.
The plane was seen by a fighter pilot heading to Bologna. The crew was
hidden by Don Vasco Casotti, the priest of Febbio, a little village in the
middle of high Apennine mountains, in a partisan held area, for about four
months. Subsequently, with many other airmen, they was helped to crossing
the German Lines to the allied area of the Serchio Valley. Recovered pieces
from the crash site, can be see at:

Williams was KIA when his plane was shot down on 4 Jul 1943 near Le
Mans, France.
Photo.
Lt. William's death occurred when he accidentally activated his parachute
while inside his B-17F #42-29928 over LaCoulonche, L'Orne, France on 4 July 1943. The
aircraft was heavily shot up and the order to bail out had been given. Lt.
John Carah (CP), saw the accidental unfurling of the parachute near the
front hatch and urged Williams to bundle it all up and jump anyway. Williams
declined and went looking for a spare parachute. He then encountered Lt.
Olof Ballinger, pilot, who was trying to keep the plane aloft long enough
for everyone to clear. Williams then proceeded to the rear of aircraft
looking for a spare parachute. That was the last anyone saw him alive. On
his way down in his parachute, John Carah saw what appeared to be Williams
exiting from the front hatch just seconds before the aircraft hit the
ground. It was too late for Williams. In 1996 Williams and three others
killed in the aircraft were honored with a stone memorial at the village
square at LaCoulounche.

Capt Gene L. Maddocks, was the lead pilot on 42-51495 on this
mission to the Misburg oil refinery. Problems from flak caused them to
relinquish the lead and they fell behind. The crew ultimately bailed out at
5000 ft over the Zuider Zee. All of Maddocks crew landed safely and were
taken prisoner by the Germans, who thought they had all of the crew when
they captured eleven. Maddocks was the last to bail out and managed evade
capture. This info comes from "Ted's Travelling Circus". MACR 13348.
