Olympic athlete, bombardier and POW.
Autobiography: The Devil at my Heels.
Class photo.
Poem written for his class book.
It's in the eyes of the Pilot
Slone was a man with a determined look;
Arriving at Midland the instructors shook.
He threw out his chest and pulled up his muscles
He knew he'd give the bomb sight a tussle.
When the day came for choosing his flyer
Who did he get but old "Pull-em-out" Dyer.
A week went by and then a month.
His score began to smell like a skunk,
He was sore all night and half the next day,
For the rope he was pulling with broke like clay.
He has now been transferred to a different flyer
and is taking advantage of the absence of Dyer.
Instead of a rope he is using a chain--
A distinguished bombardier may come of the gain.

Aircraft was damaged by flak and attacked
later by ME-109 fighters. No. 4 engine was hit and burning fiercely. Pilot
ordered the crew to bail out due to the danger of an explosion of the fuel
tanks. When 9 airmen had jumped the engine fell off the aircraft. Lt.
Schimmel saw the risks fade away and continued his flight to England. 2LT
Ziegele was killed when his parachute apparently failed to open properly
and fell dead at Zuidbarge, community of Emmen. 2Lt Ziegele was buried in
the General Cemetery Niew-Dordrecht at Emmen. No MACR submitted.

On his last mission to Heroya, NOR on 24
July 1943 he was flying in 42-25426 called Fightin Bitin. While
headed back cigars were passed out only to be dropped when attacked
by enemy a/c. After the attackers were driven off, more cigars came
out. Yet again enemy a/c attacked and were driven off. All
celebrations were postponed. For more data see page 141 in the book,
