KIRTLAND FIELD
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO
With most of its training personnel arriving from Barksdale (and
a few from Ellington Field), classes began at Kirtland on 6 December 1941. This
first class, 42-3, graduated 61 Second Lieutenants on 7 March 1942. A total of
49 classes were graduated with the last, 45-8, receiving wings on 24 February
1945. The school was closed shortly there after, some five months before the end
of hostilities. Thomas W. Ferebee, who dropped the first atomic bomb on
Hiroshima. graduated with the second class at Kirtland, 42-4 on 21 March 1942.
