MIDLAND MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

MIDLAND, TEXAS

(ABOUT 120 MILES SOUTH OF LUBBOCK)
The Army Air Forces leased this city airport in July of 1941 and began bombardier training on 6 February 1942 with the first class of 119 cadets, class 42-6. 103 of this class went on to graduate 30 April 1942. Lieutenants of this class were the first bombardiers to be known as the "Hell From Heaven Men", a nickname assigned to graduates of Midland, the world's largest bombardier school. 6,652 American bombardiers graduated in 47 classes, plus 102 Netherlands East Indies and 3 Brazilian students.

Over and above this training, Midland, on 6 August 1943, began familiarization of combat returnees on how to become an effective instructor. The first class of 116 returnees graduated from the Instructors School, previously located at Carlsbad, NM, on 6 October 1943. More than 17 classes of instructor training were completed. (Records for the last four months of 1944 have not been included). The last class of American bombardier students, augmented by transfers from Carlsbad residual classes of 45-725 and 45-735, graduated 30 January 1946 in class identified as 46-735. From loosely kept records it appears that two groups of Chinese students were combined in Midland class 46-825 and graduated on 22 February 1946 as the last class at Midland. The base was inactivated 30 June 1946 after attempts to make it a permanent facility failed.

History of Midland from a "Wings Over America" memory book for the field dating from about January 1944.
