W. D. and
his younger brother, George, took part in the Civil war, both serving in the Thirty-second
Georgia Regiment, under Colonel George P. Harrison. "Colonel Harrison’s Infantry" was assigned to Savannah, Georgia, before being assigned to the defense of Charleston, S.C. in 1863. William, served as a private throughout the entire war, and at the Battle of Olustee at
Ocean Pond, Florida on about February 20, 1864 was severely injured by the falling of a tree. His Regiment went on to surrender in Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865.
"Smith, William D. private May 7, 1862. Enlisted in Company G, 32nd Infantry Regiment Georgia on 07 May 1862. Sick in Georgia Hospital at Savannah, Georgia. September 30, 1862. No later record."
