Throughout this month, the 91st was in the First Brigade, Third Division, Fifth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. It was initially stationed near Fairfax Court House, moved to Antietam, and had duty at Sharpsburg Maryland. [Dyer, v.3 p.1604]
| ? | "Several days" after escorting the wagon train (28-29 August), the regiment marched to Washington for the funeral of a paymaster. Walter claims they were chosen, although they weren't the nearest, because they were "good at marching, and making a good soldierly appearance". The weather was fine, and the fruit tempting, but the column wasn't allowed to do much foraging.
They reached Monocacy Depot, near Frederick, in the afternoon.

While Humphreys was preparing to protect Frederick (especially watching the approach from Harper's Ferry), McClellan ordered them to move forward.
They marched five miles, and received another order to join the army at Antietam at daylight if possible.
Although the men were footsore, they marched all night, 23 miles (Humphreys; Walter has 18 miles).

Many men of the regiment were ordered to the river bank as sharpshooters.
The 118th Pennsylvania and other regiments were ordered across the river to determine whether the Confederates were still present in force.
The 118th PA experienced 269 casualties, of 737 enlisted men and officers.
