James McGhee

Before the war

He was a weaver when he was enlisted (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 8-1/8 [sic] inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and grey hair (3).

During the war

He also served in company D of the 29th Pennsylvania Infantry (6, 8).

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 25 October 1861 (1, 3, 4 [Aug 1861]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Murphy (3). He served as a private in company G (1).

He was discharged on 21 or 2 May 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability at Indiana Hospital, Washington, DC (1 [2 May], 2 [21 (?) May], 3 [21 May], 4 [Aug 1862]).

He served in company 7, 2nd Battalion, of the Veterans' Reserve Corps (6, 8).

The 1890 census claims he was a reenlisted veteran (4).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Jane and (presumed) children Mary Ann, Margaret, and Sarah Elizabeth (7). He was a carpet weaver (7).

On 29 March 1879, he applied successfully for a pension (6, 8).

On 21 October 1887, his widow, Jane McGhee, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 8).

In 1890, his widow, Jane McGee, was living at 2829 Hope Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 5).
