William McGlencey

Note

Bates (1) lists two William McGlencey's, one a veteran in company B, who was not on the muster-out roll, and another in company E. I have assumed they are the same person, but have little evidence for that assumption (see 6). Bates also has William McGinsey in company K, who is clearly the William McGlencey in company E.

Before the war

He was 27 when he enlisted (2, 6, 9 [48 in ?1878]). He was born in Tirone County, Ireland (2, 6, 9).

When he enlisted, he was a teamster (2, 6). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (6).

Description

He was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (2, 6 [5'8-1/2", light complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair]).

During the war

He was enrolled and mustered into service as a private on 16 or 19 September 1861 (1, 6 [19 Sep 61]). He served initially in company B (1, 6).

He was (probably) transferred to company K (10, 12).

He was (probably) transferred to company E on 24 December 1861 (1, 6, 8, see 9, 12).

He fought in the battle of Gettysburg (4), and was wounded there in the right cheek, on 2 July 1863 (2).

He re-enlisted for three years as a veteran volunteer, on 26 March 1864, at Bealton, Virginia (2; 1 (Bates) has 28 March; 6 [30 Mar 64, Warrenton Junction, VA], 10). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Brass, and mustered into service by Captain Barnard (2).

He was reported on a ten-day furlough on 27 April 1864 (7).

On 20 June 1864, he was detailed as a private servant to Major John D Lentz (3).

On 9 March 1865, he went on a furlough, which expired on 24 March 1865 (5). He returned on 27 March 1865 (5).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 6, 10). He had served for forty-six months (9).

After the war

He applied unsuccessfully for a pension on 13 May 1874 (10, 11).

On 30 April 1878, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (9). He had a lung disease, but was not receiving a pension (9).

He died on 8 June 1878, at the Central Branch of the National Soldiers Home (9).
