In 1860, he was living in the first ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Harriet and children Maria, Jane, and John. He was a tea dealer, and owned $50 in real estate and $300 in personal property. [source: 7]

When he enlisted, he was a dealer. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and grey hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 19 October 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lentz. He was mustered in by Captain Lentz. He was a private, in company K. [sources: 1, 2, 4, 11, 12, 15]

He was transferred on 24 December 1861 to company E. [sources: 1, 6]

He was discharged on 19 July 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at Washington, DC. He was a private, in company E. [sources: 1, 2, 3 (10 June), 4 (16 May 62), 11, 12, 15]

He also served in company D of the 59th Pennsylvania Militia. He was mustered in on 3 July 1863. He was mustered out on 18 [?] August 1863. [source: 4]

After the war

In 1880, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Harriet, and children Maria, Jennie, John, Maggie, Thomas, and Edward. He worked in a store. [source: 8]

In 1890, he was living at 1351 Christian Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a canvasser. David Curtis was also living there. [sources: 4, 5]

On 8 March 1890, his son, Thomas W McGronan, died. He was buried from his parents' residence, 1351 Christian Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 10]

On 18 May 1892, he died, at 1351 Christian Street, ward 3, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of pneumonia. He was a salesman. On 21 May 1892, he was buried, at New Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The funeral was held from his late residence, 1351 Christian Street, and a requiem mass was celebrated at St Teresa's Church. [sources: 13, 14]
