Henry S Abbott

Note

Bates (1) has two entries for Henry S Abbott, both mustered in on the same day. Although they are inconsistent, I have assumed they are for the same person; I do not know whether that assumption is true.

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 16). He was born in May 1842 (3 [1841], 11 [38 in 1880], 12 [May 1842, 58 in 1900], 13 [68 in 1910], 16 [1841], 17 [1841]). He was 21 years old when he was enlisted (7, 16 [76 at death]). He was 23 years old when he reenlisted in 1863 (8).

He was a conduc[tor?] when he was enlisted (8).

Description

He was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (7).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 2 October 1861 (1, 7, 15). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Dye (7). He served as a private in company G (1, 16, 17).

He was discharged on 14 March 1863, from the US General Hospital, Portsmouth, Rhode Island, on surgeon's certificate of disability (1 [has 24 March], 4, 6, 7, 15 [24 Mar]).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 11 February 1864 (1, 8 [doesn't mention his being a vet). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Burke (8).

He was wounded in 1864, by 30 May 1864, at the Battle of Spotsylvania (10, 16).

On 27 April 1865, he was promoted from private to sergeant, effective 1 April 1865 (1, 2, 5).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1).

After the war

In 1871/72, he married Rebecca Colflesh (12, 16). In 1900, she had had no children (12).

He moved to Warrington Township in about 1877 (16).

In 1880, he was living in Warrington, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a farmer (11). He was living with his wife Rebecca, and two others (11).

In 1890, he was living in Warrington Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (14). He had a gunshot wound in his hip (14).

On 21 November 1895, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (9, 15).

In 1900, he was living in Warrington Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (12). He was a farmer, and had been out of work 0 months (12). He was living with his wife Rebecca (12).

On 27 February 1907, he again applied for a pension (15).

In 1910, he was living in Warrington Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (13). He was a toll gathering [?] agent [?] for the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (13). He was living with his wife Rebecca (13).

He died on 22 October 1917, at his home Warrington, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (3, 15, 16). He died of "a complication of diseases" (16). He was the toll gate keeper at Neshaminty until the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company began a freight service (16). He was then freight agent at Neshaminy, then Edison, and finally Warrington (16). He was buried in Hatboro Cemetery, Hatboro, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (3, 16, 17).

On 27 October 1917, his widow, Rebecca Abbott, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (9, 15).
