In 1850, he seems to have been living in Washington, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, under the name 'Leroy Johnston'. He was living with his (presumed) mother Deborah Artha, her husband William,and their daughter Issabella. He had attended school within the year. [source: 13]

In 1860, he was living in Fayette City, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his (presumed) mother Debra Athey, her husband William, and their children. He was a painter. [source: 14]

When he enlisted, he was a farm[er]. [sources: 2, 4, 5 (painter)]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 11 inches tall, and had a sallow complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair. [sources: 2, 4, 5 (dark eyes)]

During the war

62nd and 155th PA

He also served in company C of the 62nd Pennsylvania. He mustered in as a private in company C on 20 August 1861, at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted for three years by Captain Monk. [sources: 2, 7, 8, 9, 12, 17, 18]

On 1 September 1861, he was mustered into service, at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was mustered in by Lieutenant Elwood. [source: 17 (1862, DC), 18 (1861, Harrisburg)]

He was listed on these company muster rolls: one dated 31 August 1861, the September-October 1861 roll, a roll dated 31 December 1861, and muster rolls for January-February 1862, March-April 1862, May-June 1862, July-August 1862. [source: 17]

He was listed as present on musters rolls for September-October 1862, November-December 1862, and January-February 1863 rolls, a special muster roll for 10 April 1863, and muster rolls for March-April 1863, May-June 1863, July-August 1863, September-October 1863, November-December 1863, January-February 1864, and March-April 1864.

He was wounded on 12 May 1864, at the Wilderness, Virginia. [sources: 12, 17]

On 22 May 1864, he was admitted to a hospital from the field, with a gunshot wound of the back. [source: 17]

On the May-June 1864 muster roll, he is listed as absent since he was wounded. [source: 17]

He was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania volunteer infantry, by order of Major General Warren, 2 July 1864. He served in company K of the 155th Pennsylvania. [sources: 2, 7, 17]

He mustered out when his term expired, on 13 July 1864 or 20 August 1864, from a hospital. [sources: 8, 12, 17,18 (20 Aug 64)]

On the company muster-out roll, dated 18 July 1864, he is listed as absent in hospital since he was wounded, and transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania. [source: 17]

On 1 September 1864, he was admitted to General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. [source: 17]

He was a substitute for L J Jeffries. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 10 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, by W Blouter [or Barton?]. He was mustered in as a private in company K. His service was credited to the 78th subdivision of the 21st congressional district. [sources: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company K. [sources: 1, 8, 10]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Fayette City, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his (presumed) mother Deby Athey, her husband William, and their children. He was a painter. [source: 15]

He married Hannah [unknown family name]. They had one known child:

On 25 November 1874, Hannah Abbott died, in Pennsylvania. [source: 12]

He applied successfully for a pension on 20 March 1879. [sources: 2, 7]

He seems to have been living in Fayette, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1880. If so, he was a house painter, and had been unemployed for 8 months. He was living with his daughter Dora, and with Alice Stipie. According to a summary of the pension file, whether he and Alice were married was hotly debated. [sources: 6, 12]

On 21 November 1883, he died. He was buried in the Frazer Addition, Fayette City, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 8, 9 (Village Cem, Fayette City, Washington County, PA), 11 (Mount Auburn Cem, Fayette), 12]

William C Athey, guardian of his minor dependent(s), applied unsuccessfully for a pension on 9 November 1885. [sources: 2, 7]
