Henry M Ache

Note

Bates (1) lists two Henry Ache's: Henry M Ache, in company A, and Henry W Ache, in company I and the 118th PA. The pension index (2) makes clear these are the same person.

Before the war

He was born on 30 October 1847, in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, to John O Ache and Sarah Wasser (4, 5). He was 17 years old when he enlisted in 1865 (3, 6, 13, 14 [62 in 1910]). He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania (3, 13, 14).

In 1860, he was living with his parents, in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (9). He was 13 years old, and had attended school in the previous year (9). His father was a segarmaker (9).

When he enlisted, he was a cigarmaker (3, 13 [sai[lor]?).

Description

He was 5 feet 2-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair (3, 13 [5'5", light complexion, grey eyes, light hair]).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 3, 6). He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 23 March 1865 at Easton, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3 [could be 28 March], 6, 11, 13, 16). He served in company E of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 8, 16). (The only record of his service in the 118th Pennsylvania is in the 91st's company I rolls (6).) He was enlisted for one year, at Easton, Pennsylvania, by Captain Yohe [?] or Bottle [?] (3, 13). His enlistment was credited to the eleventh congressional district (3).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred to the 91st PA, where he served as a private in companies A and I (1, 5 [mentions co.I only], 8, 12, 16).

He was absent, sick, when the regiment mustered out (1, 3, 6, 13 [discharged on muster-out rolls]). He was discharged on 14 July 1865 (11, 16 [10 Jul]).

After the war

In 1870, he may have been living in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (15). (The only census entry I've found that could be his is for Henry Acha, with foreign-born parents.) If so, he was a laborer (15).

He was married to Matilda W Mushlitz on 9 July 1870 (5). She was born on 26 April 1851, in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (5).

They had nine children (5):

In 1880, he was living in Hellertown, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (5). He was working at a furnace (5). With him were his wife Tillie, and their children Ida, Stephen, Osca, Cora, and Allen (5).

In 1890, he was living in Hellertown, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (11).

He successfully applied for a pension on 20 June 1892 (2, 8, 16).

In 1900, he was living in Hellertown Borough, Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (7). He was a machinist, and had not been out of work at all in the previous year (7). He was born in October 1847, in Pennsylvania (7). His wife and three children were living with him:

He again applied for a pension on 8 November 1909 (2, 16).

In 1910, he was living in Hellertown Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with his son Vincent and Vincent's family (14). He was a widower (14). He was a machinist, at a steel works (14).

In 1920 he was still living in Hellertown Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a laborer (10). He was a widower (10). Living with him were his daughter Cora C Krause, his granddaughter Harriett Jacobs (also widowed), his greatgranddaughter Frances E Jacobs, and his granddaughter Melba [?] Krause (10).

He died on 20 [or 30?] November 1927, at Hellertown, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (2, 16 [30 Nov]).
