James Adamson

Before the war

He was born in Lancashire, England (3, 7, 8). He was 18 years old when he was enlisted (3, 7 [30 in 1870], 8 [40 in 1880]).

Description

He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 9 September 1861 (1, 3). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain McAuther (3). He served as a private in company G (1).

He was discharged on 8 August 1862, at Alexandria, Virginia, by the surgeon in charge of Fairfax Seminary Hospital, on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 3).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the 8th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Mary (7). He was a house and sign painter, and owned $2,400 in real estate and $300 in personal property (7).

In 1880, he was living in Mendocino Township, Sonoma County, California (8). He was living with his wife Mary and children Mary, James, and Bertha (8). He was a house painter, and had been unemployed for ten months in the previous year (8).

He was buried in Oakmound Cemetery, Sonoma County, California, probably in 1888 (5, 6 [probably Healdsburg, Sonoma, CA; cem. not named]).

On 30 September 1890, his widow, Mary E Adamson [?], applied unsuccessfully from California for a pension (4, 9).
