Joseph Amer

Before the war

He was 44 years old when he was enlisted (6). He was 46 years old when he was reenlisted, in 1863 (7, 10 [47 in 1860]). He was born in Lancashire, England (6, 7, 10).

In 1860, he was living in Marple Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a hand loom weaver (10). He was living with a farmer and his family, nine other hand loom weavers, a cook, and three bobbin winders (10).

When he was enlisted, he was a dyer (6, 7).

Description

He was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and grey hair (6, 7).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 24 October 1861 (1, 6, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Sinex (3). He was mustered in service by Lieutenant Diehl (6). He initially served as a private in company H (1).

He was transferred to company D on 4 December 1861 (1, 9).

On 1 April 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty with the Ambulance Corps (4).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (12).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 7). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (7).

On 15 April 1864, Lieutenant Colonel Sinex recommended him for a detail, in compliance with general order 18 (8 April 1864) from the Army Headquarters (2). He does not say what the detail was for.

On 26 April 1864, he was detailed by Colonel Sinex for duty in the ambulance corps (3, 5 [27 Apr], 8). He was still a stretcher bearer in September (?) 1864 (5).

He was mustered by Lieutenant Swan on 26 December 1864, but the descriptive roll does not say why (7). (Perhaps this is a mistake for 26 December 1863.)

On 28 December 1864, he seems to have been reported missing in action (11). On 17 February 1865, he was reported returned from missing in action, at Annapolis (13).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1).
