He was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (10, 11).
He was enlisted and mustered into service on 7 October 1861 or 11 October 1861 (1 [7 Oct], 10 [11 Oct], 11 [11 Oct]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Keyser (10, 11). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He served as a private, initially in company B (1).
He was transferred to company C (1, 10).
On 16 May 1863, he was assigned as a guard at Division Headquarters (5).
He was absent on a five-day leave beginning 28 May 1863 (6). He was reported absent without leave on 3 June 1863, because he had not returned (7). He was still listed as absent without leave on 4 June 1863 (8), but not on the next extant consolidated morning report, from 9 June 1863 (9).
On 23 June 1863, he (along with three other men) was detailed to serve in the Provost Guard at Brigade Headquarters, and was ordered to report to Lieutenant William Walker, 146th New York Volunteers, who was the Brigade Provost Marshall (3).
He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer (1).
He was captured at Chancellorsville, Virginia, on 5 May 1863 (1 [sic; I suspect this is a mistake for 5 May 1864]). He was reported missing in action on 5 May 1864 (11, 13 [no date given], 15).
He died in Andersonville, Georgia, on 8 August 1864 (1), of marasmus (2). He was buried there on 18 August 1864, grave 6,029 (1).
On 17 September 1890, his father, George W Whitebread, successfully applied from New Jersey for a pension (4, 14, 18).
