Hiram T Ashton

Before the war

He was 19 years old when he was enlisted (5, 7 [37 in 1880], 8 [65 in 1908], 9 [17 in 1860], 10 [26 in 1870]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 7, 9, 10). He was born to George and Sarah Ashton (8).

In 1860, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his parents George and Sarah Ashton, and with William, Francis, Mary, and Annie Ashton (presumably his siblings) (9).

When he was enlisted, he was a clerk (5).

Description

He was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (5).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 10 September 1861 (1, 5, 6, 11). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain McAuthur [?] (5). He served in company G (1).

He was promoted from the ranks to corporal on 1 May 1862 (3).

He was discharged on 19 December 1862 by a hospital surgeon, at Frederick, Maryland on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 3, 4 [Frederick VA], 5 [Fredrick Md], 6, 11). He was then a corporal (1).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the 15th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his parents George and Sarah Ashton, along with Annie and Angie Ashton (10). He was a salesman--tea, coffee, etc. (10).

In 1880, he was living at 720 North 21st Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Angelina, his children Mabel and Harrison [?], and other family members (7). He was a salesman (7).

He attended the 1884 meeting of the 91st's Survivors' Association (2).

In 1890, he was living at 2023 Lambert Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was a salesman (6).

On 28 December 1891, he applied successfully for a pension (11).

He again applied for a pension on 14 February [?] 1907 (11).

On 21 December 1908, he died, at the National Soldiers Home in Hampton Roads, Virginia (8, 11). He was buried in Hampton Roads, Virginia (8).
