Before the war

He was born in 1834 (3). He was 26 years old when he enlisted in 1861 (5, 6 [25 in 1860?], 7 [15 in 1850?], 9 [33 at death in 1868]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 9).

In 1850, he may have been living in Kensington, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, with Mary Ann Austin and others (7). If so, he was a brass founder (7).

In 1860, he may have been living in Philadelphia with Chas and Ann Austin (6). If so, he was a brass turner (6).

When he was enlisted, he was a brass turner (5).

Description

He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 August 1861 (1, 5). He was enlisted for three years at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (5). He served in company A (1).

In April 1862, he signed a death certificate for Gustavus Bernstein (9).

He was discharged, at Convalescent Camp, on 31 January 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability, by order of General Martindale (1, 2, 4, 5). He was then a corporal (1, 2, 4).

After the war

He died on 21 or 26 January 1868, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of phthisis pulmonalis (3 [21 Jan], 8 [26 Jan], 9 [26 Jan]). He was a brass turner then (9). The funeral was held on 29 January, at 10 AM, from 1107 Ogden Street (his parents' residence) (8, 9). On 29 January, he was buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania (3, 8 has Odd Fellows!?, 29 [Odd Fellows!?]).

AUSTIN.--Fell asleep in Jesus, on Sunday, the 26th inst., SAMUEL C. AUSTIN, in the 34th year of his age.

The relatives and friends of the family; also, the members of Purity Lodge, No. 525 [??], I.O. of O.F., are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, from the residence of his parents, No. 1107 Ogden street, on Wednesday morning, 29th inst., at 10 o'clock. To proceed to Odd Fellows Cemetery.
