John Barth alias John Baird

Alias

He enlisted under the alias 'John Baird' (3, 8).

Before the war

He was born in September 1839 (10). He was 25 years old when he was enlisted (4, 5, 9 [30 in 1870], 10 [60 in 1900], 11 [70 in 1910]). He was born in Wurtemburg, Germany (4, 5, 9, 10, 11).

He immigrated in 1855 (11) or 1862 (10). By 1910, he was a naturalized citizen (11).

When he enlisted, he was a sailor (4, 5). (This is presumably an error for 'tailor'.)

Description

He was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair (4, 5).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 25 January 1864 (1, 3, 4, 5, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Palmer (4, 5). He was mustered by Captain Palmer (4, 5). He was due $300 in bounty, and may have been paid $29.25 (4, 5). He served as a private in company B (1).

He was reported absent without leave on 26 April 1864 (6; see also 12). On 27 April 1864, Sinex asked that he be sent to the regiment (2).

He was wounded in action (1).

He was discharged on 8 July 1865 by general order (1, 3, 8).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the 12th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was a journeyman tailor (9). He was living with Anna (presumably his wife), and with a family surnamed 'Fendale' (9).

In 1890, he was living in Camden, Camden County, New Jersey (8). He had been shot in the left side and the right leg (8).

On 25 September 1895, he applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (3, 8).

In 1897/98, he married Julia [unknown surname] (10). In 1900, she had had seven children, five of whom were alive (10). Given the number of children, and John's apparent wife Anna in the 1870 census, I suspect this is the second marriage for both of them (10).

In 1900, he was living at 112 [?] Poplar Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Julia, and daughters Carrie and Mabel (10). He was a tailor (operator) (10).

He applied again for a pension on 19 February 1907 (3).

In 1910, he was living in the Northwest Branch of the National Soldiers' Home, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (11). He was widowed [sic] (11). He was a tailor (11).

He died on 9 November 1914, at the National Home, in Wisconsin (3).

On 16 September 1916, his widow, Julia Barth, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (3, 8).
