He was 19 years old when he enlisted (4, 6 [15 in 1860]). He was born in York County, Pennsylvania (4).
He may be the Joseph Baker who in 1850 was living with Joseph and Elizabeth Baker in York County, Pennsylvania (5).
In 1860, Joseph was still living with Joseph and Elizabeth Baker in York County (6). He was an apprentice to a blacksmith, and had attended school within the last year (6).
When he enlisted, he was a blacksmith (4).
He was 5 feet 6-3/4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and black hair (4).
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 January 1864 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Stretch (4). He served as a private in company A (1).
In May or June 1864, he lost one Springfield rifle musket and a bayonet (2).
On 22 June 1865, he went on a furlough, which expired on 2 July 1865 (3).
He was absent without leave at muster out (1).

[I did not find an entry for him in the index on <www.ancestry.com> to the 1890 veterans' census]
[He was not living with his parents in 1870]
[The 1870 and 1880 censuses have several Joseph Baker's of about the right age and born in Pennsylvania; I do not know which (if any) is this Joseph Baker.]
[I did not find him in RootsWeb WorldConnect (searched January 2006)]
