Adolph M Bankerd

Before the war

He was born in March 1840, in Pennsylvania (9). He was 22 years old when he was enlisted (3, 4, 11). He was born in Alleghany [County?], Pennsylvania (3, 11).

He was a glassblower when he was enlisted (4, 11). He was living in Birmingham, Pennsylvania (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (3, 11).

During the war

He was enlisted on 28 January 1862, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (3 [28 Jun], 4 [28 Jan], 5 [29 Jan], 11). He was enlisted for three years, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant G A Werk [?] (3). On 10 February 1862, he was mustered into service in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry, by Captain Dodge, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

He was transferred from company L of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 2, 5). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (1). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (2). He was then absent, as a private (2).

According to the 1890 census, he was dischaged on 20 February 1865 (8). According to the company K April 1865, he was discharged because his term had expired, on 29 April 1865, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (13). (Given the date he enlisted, 20 February seems more plausible.)

After the war

In 1866/67, he married Sarah E Hunter (9, 10). She had seven children six of whom were alive in 1900, including (9, 10):

In 1870, he was living in Birmingham, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (6). He was a glassblower, and owned $500 in personal property (6). He was living with his wife, Sarah, and two children (Carrie and Mary) (6).

In 1880, he was living in Richland District, Ohio County, West Virginia (7). He was a gardener (7). He was living with his wife, Sarah, and five children: Carrie, Mary E, William I, Hettie A, and Blanch C (7).

In 1890, he was living in Wheeling, Richland District, Ohio County, West Virginia (8). He had been wounded in his foot in 1863 (8).

In 1900, he was living in Knoxville Borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in a rented home (9). He was a glass gatherer, who had been out of work six months in the previous year (9). He was living with his wife Sarah, and their children Caroline, William (a bookkeeper), Edwin A (a bookkeeper), Julia H (at school), and two sisters-in law (9).
