He was enlisted and mustered into service on 29 August 1861 (1, 3, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain McArthur (3, 4). He served as a private in company C (1).

He deserted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 21 January 1862 (1, 2, 3, 4). The company C register of deserters reports his "whereabouts [were] not known" (2).
