John Bartholemew

Name

According to the pension index by name index, he enlisted under the alias 'John Brady' (8, 11). I have no record of his having used that name in the 91st; perhaps he used it in the 6th Connecticut (8).

Before the war

He was 19 years old when he was enlisted (5, 6 [20 in 1863]). He was born in Milton, Pennsylvania (5, 6).

He was a boatman when he was enlisted (5, 6).

Description

He was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (5, 6 [5'6"]).

During the war

He also served in Company C of the 6th Connecticut Infantry (8, 11).

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 25 October 1861 (1, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Hall (5). He served as a private in company F (1).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (7).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863 (1, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant W H Carpenter (6).

On 12 March 1864, he was reported under arrest (3).

On 18 March 1864, he was released from arrest and restored to duty, but the pay for the time he were absent, transportation, and the reward authorized for deserters, along with the cost of any lost property were deducted from his pay (2).

On 26 March 1864, he was reported sent to hospital (4).

He deserted on 20 June 1865 (1).

After the war

In 1864/65, he married Susan [unknown surname] (9). In 1910, she had had one child, who was still living (9).

In 1890, he was living in ward 2, South Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (10).

On 23 July 1890, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 11).

In 1910, he was living in Henry Township, Payne County, Oklahoma (9). He was a farmer (9). He was living with his wife Susan, his son Will, and Will's family (9).

He died on 16 November 1913, at Stillwater, Oklahoma (11).

On 29 November 1913, his widow, Susan M Bartholomew, applied unsuccessfully from Oklahoma for a pension (8, 11).
