He was 5 feet 7-3/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (5).

During the war

He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 18 August 1862, by Lieutenant Closson (1, 2, 5). He was mustered in as a private in company H, on 31 August 1862, by Colonel Reiff, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 5). He was paid $29 in bounty and premium (5).

He was discharged at camp near Falmouth, Virginia, on 10 or 11 December 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 4, 5 [camp near Fredericksburg VA, 10 Dec]).

After the war

On 12 June 1863, he applied successfully for a pension (9).

In 1880, he was living at 1739 North 9th [?] Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Amanda and children Kate, Walter, Edwin, Eugene, and Marion (6). His occupation was picture frames (6).

John Bateman died on 8 October 1881, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of consumption (2 [of a rupture], 8). He was buried on 11 October 1881, in Odd Fellows' Cemetery (8). He died at, or was living at, 1739 North 9th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8).

His widow applied successfully for a pension (9).

In 1890, his widow, Amanda E Bateman, was living at 125 North 6th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2). Also living there were Edwin A Bateman (a clerk), and three other people (with different surnames) (3).

In 1900, his widow, Amanda E Bateman, was living at 1230 Firth [?] Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). She was living with her daughter Katie, Katie's husband, and a boarder (7). She had had nine children, three of whom were alive (7).
