In 1860, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with Joseph and Margaret Bennett (presumably his parents), along with other people (7). He was a farm laborer (7).

He was a farmer when he was enlisted (4).

Description

He was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district (1, 4). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 4, 5 [10 Sep]). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (4). He served as a private in company F (1).

He was discharged by general order on 22 June 1865 (1, 3 [1 Jun 64], 5).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (post office Chaneysville) (8). He was living with his wife Ann Marie and his children Cornelia and Irvin (8). He was laboring on a farm (8).

On 21 April 1871, he applied successfully for a pension (10, 11).

Sometime in the 1870's, he swore a statement supporting James Aaron's application for a pension (6).

In 1880, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Ann Maria, his children C Delia, Irvin, Appalona, Elwood, and Robert, and a farm worker (9). He was farming (9).

In 1890, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford Township, Pennsylvania (5).

On 27 February 1890, his minor dependent, Charles [?] William Popeln [?], applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 11).

He died on 1 November 1895 (11). He was buried in the Mount Zion Graveyard, in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (2).
