William Berkheimer

Before the war

In 1860, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with John and Sarah Berkheimer (presumably his parents) (8). He was a farm lab[orer] (8).

In 1861 or 1862, he married Henrietta [unknown surname] (8, 10). In 1900 and 1910, she had had one child, who was still living (8, 10).

When he was enlisted, he was a laborer (3, 4).

Description

He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair (3, 4).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 3, 4). He was enlisted and mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 3, 4, 5). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (3, 4). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (3, 4). He served as a private in company B (1).

He was discharged at Washington, D.C., by general order 94, War Department, on 30 May 1865 (1, 5), or 25 May 1865 (2).

After the war

In 1880, he was living in West Saint Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a farmer (11). He was living with his wife Henrietta and son Thomas (11).

In 1890, he was living in East Saint Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (post office St Clairsville) (7). He had heart disease (7).

On 17 July 1890, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 6).

He applied for a pension again on 5 March 1907 (5).

In 1900, he was living in East Saint Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Henrietta (10). He was a day laborer, and had been unemployed for six months in the previous year (10).

In 1910, he was living in East St Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Ettie (9). He was living on his "own income" (9).

He died on 16 October 1916, at Osterburg [?], Pennsylvania (5).

On 11 November 1916, his widow, Henrietta Berkheimer, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 6).
