George Blake

Before the war

He was 22 years old when he enlisted in 1861 (8, 9). He was born in Millville, New Jersey (8).

In 1850, he was (probably) living with William and Ann Blake, who were presumably his parents (10). They were living in Millville Township, Cumberland County, New Jersey (10). He was 12 years old (10).

He was a glass blower (8, 9). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (9).

Description

He was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair (8 [brown hair], 9 [light hair]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 27 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 8, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (8). He served as a private in company A (1, 3, 6).

He had returned from being a prisoner to the regiment on 22 February 1863 (7). He returned with several men who were captured at Snicker's Gap, Virginia, early in November 1862 (7).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg ().

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (1, 9).

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia (1).

He was transferred on 1 April 1865 to the Veterans' reserve corps (1, 8, 9, 12). He served in D 4 Veterans' reserve corps (3).

After the war

He applied successfully for a pension on 28 June 1880 (2, 3).

He died on 13 June 1886 (5, 6). He is buried in Cedar Green Cemetery, in Clayton, New Jersey (4, 6).

His mother, Elizabeth A Blake, applied unsuccessfully from New Jersey for a pension on 18 November 1886 (2, 3).
