Martin Blake

Before the war

He was born in Albany, New York (2, 11, 12, 13). He was 40 years old when he enlisted (2, 7, 11 [42 in 1860], 13 [31 in 1850]).

He married Hannah [unknown surname] (15). In 1900, she had had six children, two of whom were alive (15).

They moved away from New York after 1840 (13).

In 1850, he was living in ward 2, Moyamensing, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (13). He was a type founder (13). He was living with his wife Hanna, and with Elisabeth and Edward (presumably their children (13).

In 1860, he was living in ward 2, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Hannah Blake, and with Edward and Emma Blake (presumably their children) (11). He was a type caster (11).

When he enlisted, he was a type founder [?] (2, 12 [type moulder [?]).

Description

He was 6 feet tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private, as a recruit, for three years, in company E on 16 September 1862, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 7). He was enlisted and mustered into service by Lieutenant Gregory (2).

He was reported missing in action on 7 May 1863 (5).

On 29 October 1863, he was reported regained from missing in action, and absent with leave (6).

He was transferred in October 1863 to company B regiment 24 of the Veterans' Reserve Corps, because he was unfit for field duty (1, 3, 4, 7, 10, 12). The regiment did not report him transfered until 22 April 1864 (8), and seems to have reported the transfer again on 29 June 1864 (9).

He died of apoplexy in Washington DC, on 3 November 1864, while still in the Veterans' Reserve Corps (12, 17). The funeral was held (?) from 2 Sydmouth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was buried on 7 November 1864, in Lafayette Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12).

After the war

His widow, Hannah Blake, applied successfully for a pension on 6 December 1864 (4, 10).

In 1880, Hannah Blake was living at 1128 Pearce Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). She was living with her daughter Emma and nephew Edward (14).

In 1890, Hannah Blake was living at 1128 Pierce Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17).

In 1900, Hannah Blake was living at 1128 Pierce Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). She was living with her daughters Emma and Elizabeth (15).

On 5 November 1901, Hannah Blake died, of pneumonia left lung (16). She died at 1128 Pierce Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). She was buried at Lafayette Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).
