Before the war

He was born on 10 September 1816, in Dover, York County, Pennsylvania (3, 6 [41 (sic)], 11 [53 in 1870], 12 [61 in 1880]). He was born in Pennsylvania (6, 11, 12).

He married Elizabeth in 1846 (3, 5).

When he enlisted, he was a carpenter (3, 6).

Description

He was 5 foot 9 inches tall, had brown hair, and grey eyes (3, 6 [5'10", dark complexion, grey eyes, dark hair]).

During the war

He served in company E of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (from York County, Pennsylvania) (2, 4, 8, 9). He was mustered into service on 13 September 1861 (3, 4). He was promoted to corporal on 27 June 1864 (4). He was captured at Carter's Woods, and returned to the regiment on 5 October 1863 (3). He was discharged on 13 October 1864, because his term had expired (3, 4).

He understated his age by 14 years when he enlisted (3).

He was a substitute (1). He was enlisted and mustered into service in the 91st Pennsylvania infantry on 24 March 1865 (1, 6, 7). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (6). His service was credited to the sixteenth congressional district (6). He served as a private in company D (1).

He reported for duty on 24 March 1865 (6).

He was mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 7). He was then a corporal (7).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Mechanicsburg Borough, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Eliza, and children Daniel, Sally, Charles, and Bertie (11). He was a carpenter, and owned $1,800 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property (11).

His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1880 (3, 5).

In 1880, he was living in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his son Charles and daughter-in-law Mary (12).

In 1890, he was living in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania (post office East Harrisburg) (7). He had rheumatism (7).

On 20 August 1890, he applied successfully for a pension (8, 9).

In 1892, he was living in Penbrook, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania (3).

He again applied for a pension on 25 [?] February 1907 (9).

He died in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on 24 December 1907 (2, 3, 9). He is buried in Trindle Springs Lutheran Cemetery, Spring Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania (10).
