He was born in November 1832 (11). He was 25 years old when he enlisted in 1863 (3, 4 [41 in 1880], 8 [12 in 1850], 9 [22 in 1860], 10 [31 in 1870], 11 [62 in 1900], 12 [72 in 1910], 13 [82 in 1920]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 4, 8, 11).

In 1850, he was living in Bethel Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with Isaac and Mary Ann Booth, who were presumably his parents (8). He had attended school within the year (8).

In 1860, he was living in Bethel, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (9). The census does not list an occupation for him (9). He was still living with Isaac and Mary Ann Booth (9).

He married Catherine S [unknown surname] in 1860 or 1861 (11, 12). They had four children (11, 12). Three were alive in 1900, and two in 1910 (11, 12).

When he was enlisted, he was a carpenter (3).

Description

He was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair (3).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 5). He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 13 July 1863 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 3, 5, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). His enlistment was credited to the second congressional district (3).

He was transferred from company H of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry to the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, by special order 138, headquarters, Army of the Potomac (dated 1 June 1865) (1, 5). He served as a private in company A of the 91st Pennsylvania (1).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 5).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in South Chester Borough, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a carpenter, and owned $200 in personal property (10). He was living with his wife Kate, and three children (presumably theirs): Mary, Gretta, and Phoebe (10).

In 1880, he was living in Concord, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (4). He was "working at carpentering" (4). He was living with his wife Kate, and four daughters (4):

One other person, William Smith (29, born Delaware, a farm laborer) was also living with them (4).

In 1890, he was living in Concord Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (6).

He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 12 September 1892 and on 18 March 1907 (2, 7).

He died on 18 January 1924 [?], at Philadelphia Pennsylvania (2).
