Charles E Bournonville

A puzzle

In 1870, a Charles Bournonville was living in the 13th ward of Philadelphia, accdording to the 1870 US census (38th district, page 347). He was born in France, and was 63 years old. He is pretty clearly the Charles Bournonville in Alain Bournonville's database (13). He was born to Antoine Bournonville and Louise Sandberg (12, 13). He died in San Francisco (13). His half-brother August Bournonville was living in Philadelphia in 1860 and 1870 (11, 13; 1860 US census 12th ward 1st division, page 70; 1870 US Census Philadelphia PA 3th ward 38th district page 346; see also 1900 census Philadelphia PA 29th ward e.d. 709 p.85A).

If this Charles is the same person as the Charles who served in the 91st Pennsylvania, the age in the regimental records is surprisingly wrong.

Before the war

He was 18 years old when he was enlisted (6). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6).

Description

He was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair (6).

During the war

He was enlisted and mustered into service on 20 August 1861 (1, 6, 7, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (6, 7 [Lt Col]). He served in company C (1).

He was appointed corporal on 21 September 1861 (3, 4).

He was discharged on 12 February 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at Falmouth, Virginia (1, 2, 5, 7, 9). He was then a corporal (1, 2).

After the war

He was a member of Nebraska Grand Army of the Republic post 227, in Chadron, Dawes County, Nebraska (8).

On 14 October 1882, he applied unsuccessfully for a pension, from Dakota (9, 10).

He died on 26 September 1897 (11). He was buried at Highland Cemetery, Great Falls, [Cascade County,] Montana (11).
