Franklin Braceland

Before the war

He was 25 when he enlisted (2, 7 [44 in 1880], 8, 10 [32 in 1870], 11 [44 at death in 1882]). He was born in Danagle [? perhaps Donegal] Ireland (2, 7, 8, 10, 11).

When he enlisted, he was a bricklayer (2, 8). He was living in Philadelphia when he was enrolled (8).

Description

He was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (2, 8 [5'6", black hair]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private in company E on 28 August 1861, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 8). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered into service by Colonel Reiff (2).

He deserted on 18 May 1862, at Washington DC (3). He was caught on 7 March 1864 (2, 3). On 18 March 1864, he was reported regained from desertion (9). On 19 March 1864, Lieutenant Colonel Sinex asked that he be released from arrest, reporting that he had been sent to the peninsula after being arrested and hadn't received pay for eleven months (!?) (5). Braceland was returned to his company for duty, without being court martialed, on two conditions: that he lose all pay and allowances for the time he was absent, and that he make good all time lost (2, 3, 4).

In May or June 1864, he lost two Springfield rifle muskets and one set of accoutrements (6).

He deserted a second time on 23 June 1864, near Petersburg (1, 2, 3, 8).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with Annie (presumably his wife), and with John and Frank (presumably their children (10). He was a bricklayer (10).

In 1880, he was living in the Philadelphia County Prison, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was a bricklayer (7). He was married (7). His wife, Anny, was (apparently) living at 1721 Pearl Street, Philadelphia Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her two sons, Francis and John (12). She claimed to be widowed or divorced (12).

On 19 July 1882, he died, of alcoholism, in the County Prison, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was married, and was a bricklayer (11). On 21 July 1882, he was buried, at Philanthropic Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11).
